I have the Garmin 255W from 3years ago.
it has traffic and free maps.

I see a Garmin 1490LMT (Maps, Bluetooth, traffic) for $110.

Any new tech or bells/whistles that make it worthwhile to upgrade from the 255w?

(THose who say use Android/iPhone need not respond.)

If you have the latest maps, there is no reason to upgrade units.

I might upgrade if Garmin ever releases a unit with a quality capacitive touchscreen.

Don't bother. I still use a Mio C520 for when my car is at the mechanic (rare) or when I go on travel and rent a car (more often).

bigger screen, BT, and getting the signal faster. I upgrade my 3 years old garmin to the 1450LMT for $95.

I have a 255W as well, but I ended up getting an in-dash nav unit, the 255W does not have free map updates, at least mine doesn't. It has to end with "LMT" in the Garmin product to have free lifetime map and traffic updates.

Other than maps, no reason to upgrade IMO..

I'm in the same boat (except I don't have any spare $ :'( ). I have a 260, I think and i would like to upgrade. Somethings I like about the newer models are bigger screens and road speed limits. Alos, I think they show your current speed when you're in a route. My 260 does not.

Not sure it's worth the $ to upgrade but if I had it I would.

definitely worth it for the speed limit.

i had the 3" nuvi 200 and upgraded to the 4.3" 255w for 2 reasons:
1) higher screen resolution. instead of 300x200, it's like 500x300?
i see more on the screen.

2) speed limit. i hate when i dont know what the speed limit is because i speed. but want to fall short of reckless driving (30+ mph over the limit)

unfortunately, from what i read, the 5" 1490LMT has the same screen resolution as the 255w. i wont see more.

the only advantage is Lane Assist. and maybe being able to save my own custom routes so the gps can notify me if there's traffic on MY route.

Not really. If you're a speeder, a GPS unit won't save you from a ticket. Instead of upgrading (more like side-grading actually) your GPS, buy a quality radar detector (and if your state allows it, laser jammer).

Absolutely not.
I've have my Nuvi 760 since 2008. Never saw the need to upgrade.
