GPS for the non tech savvy?

My brother is not only navigationally challenged, but tech challenged. He's looking for a GPS unit. Unfortunately, while I consider myself pretty tech savvy (computers/tvs, etc) I am GPS ignorant.

There are a couple of models available for $150-ish right now, and I'm trying to weed through them. The TomTom One (hard to find), TomTom One 3rd edition and the Mio C230. A couple of questions I have:

Are these units decent at off road nav? My brother is a nature enthusiast who spends a lot of time in the parks in Ohio and PA.

As far as I can tell, one of the main differences between the TomTom and the Mio is that the TT will give audible directions in feet while the Mio will give street names. Is that correct? And is one particularly easier in that regard than the other?

Is the TT considerably easier to use than the Mio?

Are there any monthly/yearly fees associated with either unit?

And last, given a budget max of 200, is there another unit that blows these away?

Hey Bsipe9, I was just messing around with my buddy's Mio this weekend (I'm using a TomTom ONE XL) and I wasn't convinced that it was better. I feel that the TomTom is easier to use.

From what I've heard online, the ONE 3rd Edition is the best bang for your buck at that price range.

I think there's an optional fee for getting the traffic service, but if you don't, then theres no fee at all.

I've heard its good for off-roading, but I've never tried it myself.

Any other questions?

Really appreciate the response Matilda.
Any other input while I prepare to give my advice?

The TomTom is an incredible little program. There are no other monthly fee's, however like Matilda mentioned you can opt for traffic service which gives you a heads up on detours and traffic jams.

I've had mine for only a few days now (setup on my mobile phone - WM6) and can attest it's quite intuitive and easy to use.
