GPS installed & hidden in a computer?

I recently read where someone had his laptop stolen. He accessed it with another computer and activated the laptop's built in web cam. He was able to see the person sitting at his computer. I think it said he got his computer back, don't really remember. And I don't know if this is all just BS. Possible to do that?
But it made me wonder if it would be possible to install a small GPS chip in a computer so that if and when it was stolen you could track it down. Are there other things, or ways, to accomplish this? Possibly a way to have a computer secretly send the thief's isp address to the rightful owner.

Computrace has embedded firmware into BIOSes (like my Dell Latitude D620) to make the service even more transparent. I've never used it myself though, I just encrypt my HDD and that's good enough for me. I care more about the data than the laptop itself and I feel the risk of theft is relatively low for me personally.

I wish there was a open source full disk encryption for OSX, but because there isn't I just use filevault. I also have reverse SSH turned on. A script runs as a cron service that checks a URL. IF that URL returns the word FALSE instead of TRUE then it will ssh into my server. At that point I should be able to turn on my cron timebomb and copy off any data that missed the time machine backup.
