GPS navigation for a bicycle

Is it a good idea to ride a bicycle with a GPS navigation and does anybody uses it with a bicycle?

I have never used one. But if you found a good mounting system, a smartphone would make for a great one. Also you'd have an accelerometer too, could get some fun info (nasty bumps and whatnot).

I'd imagine standalone products (especially if its specifically "made for bicycles") will be overpriced

I've used the Garmin cycle computer (Edge 205). The real benefit is not for finding your way but for being able to track so much data about your ride. Distance, climbing, speed, etc. You can even store the route and try to beat your best time next time you ride it. It's a great training tool and comes with some excellent software so you can download your rides and keep training logs easily. Very handy.

Still, sometimes it's just nice to go for a ride and not focus on those things though too.

Today I have tried an Android speedometer (app) with a few functions. It worked nice but it was always in my pocket so I haven't seen my speed. Where do I find a cell phone mount?

I've used a garmin 60csx for five years or so.

Mostly for mountain biking in the boonies where trails are unmarked and indistinct. Really nice to read about a great ride, download the gps track, put it on the gps, and have a great ride without getting lost.

Two or three times I've used around town for "driving" directions on my bike.


Some people are into the stats (elevation gained, speed, time moving, etc.) but that's not really my thing.

No kidding. The Edge 205 I have I've had for years and thousands of miles of riding. Still works perfectly, battery lasts for about 8 hours and it is lightweight and rugged.

I used my garmin 760 or whatever the model is. works fine....you just need to buy the bike adapter. They are cheap on ebay.

I have a cheap $25 dollar computer on my bike. It tells me speed, distance traveled, etc.
