GPS/RFID: Tracking equipment.

We are having problems with some items just up and walking away and are looking to put tracking devices inside the equipment (laptops, radios, etc) which are expensive. Some radios are up to $4,000 each.

Does anyone know of a solution that we can use to be able to locate these items at all times and possibly keep an inventory of them.

RFID is short-range only I think. It won't do you any good for something someone takes off the premises.

There are several software packages you can buy that will "phone home" any time a laptop makes an internet connection so you can track it down.

I'm not sure what to suggest for the radios. People in the labs at work would "borrow" our handheld thermocouple meters and never return them, so I ordered a bunch of locks be put on the cabinets and made sure only I had the keys. If you wanted to borrow one, a record was kept so that we knew who had it.

If the laptop is formatted immediately after its theft, the software is useless.

You should invest in some sort of security/GPS device, rather than a software package.
