Gpt on linux

Gpt is a real pain.

I want to format my hd as GPT follow some of this guide: https://www.tecmint.com/install-linux-mint-17/

make 2 partitions, (grub and efi), and then copy root and home from an existing HD
will this work?

how do I update fstab with the 2 new (GPT) related partitions??
what settings/switches do i use in Fstab for these partitions?

What do you have in fstab now, in first column?

The old style had device name, like in:

/dev/hda1 /boot ...

The trouble with that is that the name could change from hda to sda, sdb, ...

Filesystems, like ext3, can be labeled and devicename was replaced:

LABEL=boot /boot ...

Alas! You could have two drives with same label-name on filesystems.

Enter UUID. Random, hopefully unique identifier:

UUID=ba5c3324-cb35-4730-8f11-04b2ad8235cb /boot ...

If you do clone a filesystem, then UUID is copied. If you just copy contents, then UUID is different.

Boot loader and /etc/fstab look for UUID. The initramfs probably too.

I can fix the Fsatb uuid entries, but do i need to be concerned about the partitions for grub, and EFI in the FSTAB??

that is the real question, or just the partitions that linux is using: home, root?

The question is: who reads/writes to where and when?

The EFI must find the boot loader, the loader has to read the kernel and initramfs, the kernel has to mount the root (and other necessary filesystems).

What about kernel update? Somebody writes a new kernel and initramfs. Somebody updates the grub.cfg?

Yes, there is probably some infrequent access to EFI System Partition from running Linux.

the first 2 for grub, and EFI are not listed???
