Hi All

My current setup (I am from India):

Proc : AMD 5950x
Mobo : Asus ROG Crosshair VIII dark hero
RAM : 2 x 16GB DDR4 G Skill 3600 C16
GPU : GTX 1080
Display : Acer XB271HU

Primary use : Gaming + Work + Photo editing (Lightroom/Photoshop). Gaming is "seasonal" - spending more time on the console these days but desktop gaming days will definitely come!

I had upgraded the Mobo/Proc/RAM (over a year ago) and kept the GPU. I am planning on upgrading the monitor and GPU and I had a few queries:

1) GPU --> Have been using my 1080 for 7 years now. This purchase would most likely last for a similar timeframe - so thinking of going big - a 4090 maybe.
  • The cheapest 2 options for me are: the 4090 FE (~1920 USD - This is the MSRP in India) and the Gigabyte Gaming OC (~1950 USD) - BTW, I am from India.
    • I hear that the Gigabyte Gamin OC has less coil whine. Any other reasons to pick one over the other ?
    • I have Corsair 1000RMi PSU. Should be able to handle a 4090 ? Need to just buy a 12VHPWR cable ? Will this one do (the two 8 pins goes to the PSU PCIe outputs ?) :
https://mdcomputers.in/corsair-600w-pcie-5-0-12vhpwr-type-4-psu-power-cable-cp-8920284.html

2) Display --> Thinking of going ultra-wide, but, very difficult to get one of those in India! Have posted a topic under the "Displays" section...

Help!

For the same price you could upgrade to a laptop with more performance. The 4090 version is $2869 and you won't pay tax on it and shipping shouldn't be too bad either. Just add ram and M2.

If you still need a big display just keep using the one you have with it.

I picked up a 12700h/3060 last year for $1300 shipped and then upgraded the display to 4k120 for about $300 more myself.

Not what you were thinking but, a better deal when it comes to an upgrade when it comes to price. You can find a more local shipping option by searching for the model number as there are global resellers under different names but the same laptop.

I remember looking at barebone laptops when I first assembled my desktop 7 years ago. And then, of course, I went the desktop way after a lot of thought.

"rjtech" doesn't ship to India. And even if I find a seller that ships to India, the customs/taxes would add another 40% to the cost (after the shipping charges!). And the $2869 is without RAM/SSD/Windows. And then there is the question of warranty and return shipping if something does go wrong... Am I missing something?

Pricing jumps considerably when adding things before shipping and the markup is considerable compared to buying the components yourself.

There are at least a dozen regional sellers under different names. Finding one in India is up to you but, having it drop shipped somewhere without the taxes and duties and then forwarded is an option I've seen some use. I've even sold a laptop unknowingly to someone using this setup that went to Florida and was forwarded to Nicaragua. The only reason I figured it out was when they complained the forwarder didn't get the package due to them not being there to receive it.

I had searched for a Clevo reseller in India long back, and did a quick search now as well - no luck. And even if I do find one, I am certain that the prices would be very high.

I am not sure how I can avoid paying customs/taxes by drop shipping. When the package lands in India, I'll have to pay ~40%, unless it is a low value item. 🤔

Anyhow, it would be awesome if you could help with the questions in the original post.

Maybe I'll move the questions on displays to the displays section in the forum.

I can't speak to the desktop GPU and just getting a 12V cable. I know there have been some issues with some card and power connectors that cause them to melt or stop working. As for brands I tend to focus on the components rather than who's selling it. When it comes down to it all of the gpus on a specific series are the same its mostly going to come down to price and warranty. The two things I would do though is pull it apart and replace the paste with a graphite pads and check into replacement fan availability. The other thing with these higher end cards due to the heat they put out is look into water cooling. Under load the fans will be extremely annoying.
