Hi all,
Post is as the title says basically.
PC Specs are as follows:
CPU: i5-4960 @ 3.5 ghz
GPU: GTX 970 4GB
RAM: 8gb ddr3 (Exceleram 1600mhz)
HD: Seagate Barracuda 250 GB (its ancient!)
PSU: Corsair 500w
Motherboard: MSI H81I LGA1150 Mini-ITX
Background - I built this system a year and a half ago and have had no hardware problems thus far. A couple of weeks ago the PC would not turn on one day and so I therefore took apart the system and using parts from an old system to test I was able to diagnose the problem as the motherboard. I RMAed the mobo and was re-setting up the system today. The PC booted up fine, got to desktop etc. Suddenly, as I was re setting up my peripherals and was swapping over my monitors the GPU fan went beserk and no video output was possible.
I understand the issue could be either that the card is faulty, or that the PSU cannot output enough power? Are these the likely scenarios?
The system works fine with the GPU taken out from it using the motherboard video outputs. I also tested the system with an older GPU i have (Radeon 7850 2gb) and the system was also absolutely fine with this as well.
Therefore I am leaning towards the GPU being the issue. However it possible that my PSU is producing enough power to power the system plus an older and less powerful GPU but not quite enough power to run the 970?
I have a fair amount of old parts I can test to troubleshoot, and a family PC I can also use to test - but the issue i have is that none of these are capable of running the 970 so I cant confirm its broken. I've got a poor brand (OCZ) 500w power supply that I could maybe test with - but if the same thing happened it could also just be not producing enough power so it wouldnt be very helpful.
Sorry for the long post, hopefully it makes sense - any help would be greatly appreciated.
