GPU for mITX 1060 or 480?

Lots of deals lately on 1060 and 480 cards in the $200ish range and I'm thinking about finally dropping one in because my system (specs below) sure gets noisy playing Civ6 or running Photoshop Elements on large batches of photos. Then again, not sure if it's the CPU or onboard graphics that's the bottleneck.

Running a pair of Dell 30" at 2560 x 1600 currently.

Only gaming I do is Civ6, so not looking for a hardcore gaming card probably.

Any advice appreciated...

Looks like nVidia has the edge in this game tpu review .

Edit: for a mini-ITX build the 1060 will also offer the advantage of lower power usage.

Get one of the slightly larger ones which can fit in your case. The smaller ones with a single fan can become noisier after time(I have a mini-ITX system too). Also spend the extra on the GTX1060 6GB if you can.

Yeah, I've been eying this Zotac, but trying to decide if dropping $275 (after tax) is going to give me a noticeable performance increase, or if my CPU will still be screaming despite the dedicated GPU.

What graphics card do you have now??

If you are using the Intel stock cooler it is rather noisy in a smaller mini-ITX case. I would look at an aftermarket low profile cooler.

Just using the integrated graphics currently. Probably am using the stock cooler since I think I picked up a retail box processor, but will check and explore other options. Have a good rec to replace?

I'd look at the Cryorig C7, the Noctua NH-L9x65 and maybe Silverstone's low profile models. You want something that can handle 84w cpus if I recall correctly.

For Civ 6 you might want to see how the dx12 patch turns out before purchasing, plus BF deals are coming up soon. Either card will work well though

the Zotac card you linked is on sale for 265$ now at newegg. If it will fit I recommend that one. Its 8.27 inches long.

Yea, i would go for a 4GB RX 470 and downclock it. With the DX-12 patch it should be more than enough for 60fps Vsync.

I think the choice is clear, unless you need more than 60 fps.
The gtx1060 will release 30 watts less heat into your smaller case and is the easy winning choice here.


Be careful of other forum members looking into their crystal balls telling you some day there is going to be a miracle patch that will give you 62 fps with a 480 and save you $5, and be a whole 2 fps faster than what you can BUY NOW.

Your image is for a 1080 not either of the 2 cards we are discussing here nor does the fps we are seeing makes sense for a 1080 if the 1060 is getting better other than the top one.

Otherwise most 480's I just looked at are going for $220ish while you can get the 6 gb 1060 for $240 easy.

I was showing CPU scaling, why would they use a lower end card for that? The point is the game is heavily CPU limited and DX12 should help with that.

Yea, cant believe some of the "advice" that gets posted in these forums. According to game.gpu, the 6gb 1060 is about 20% faster in this game than the 8gb 480. I really would like a link to those "tons" of 480s at 200.00. Looking on newegg, the cheapest 8gb model is around 250.00, very close to the 6gb 1060. There arent even any 4gb models of the 480 at 200.00. The choices for this game really come down to the 1060 for efficiency and best performance in this class of card, or the 470 if you want to sacrifice some performance and save some money.

Edit: I do see 2 480 models for 200.00, one of which is on sale for 180.00 after rebate, but that is a sale that ends in a couple of days. But those are both 4gb models. The 180.00 after rebate is a good deal, but at 200.00 I would just go with a 470. Strange also how advice changes from "spend 50.00 more to get better performance" to "look for a good deal" depending on the circumstances.

The problem is those are both 4 gig ones and the 8 gigs are going for $250 at the cheapest on newegg while the 6 gb 1060 is going for with one at $240 and a bunch at $250 also.

Op asked for 480 and not 470 so we don't need to talk about those.

It seems the evidence is highly recommending either version of the 1060 for this one game over either types of 480's as right now you could grab a 3 gb 1060 on newegg for $170 after rebate and that's $10 cheaper then the cheapest 4 gb rx 480 and still get a 20% boost with the 1060.

Don't get me wrong as either cards would be great for the game at this price range however if op only wants to play this one game it's best to go for 1060 at this time-frame.

You are right, it is much better to spend $265 for that Zotac model than any of the 480s. OP will do much better spending the extra $65-85 (30-45%) for maybe 20% better performance depending on how CPU limited he is. Great advice all around folks...

Stop comparing a 4 gb version of the rx 480 with a 6gb version of the 1060.

The 8 gb versions of the 480 cost as much as the 6gb version while the 3 gb for 1060 and 4 gb for 480 are once again near the same price point.

Newegg has two-three RX 470 4GB for $170 today, no need to spend more for that game unless you want to go for 8x MSAA for some reason.

Why not use the 4gb? It's not like the game uses a lot of VRAM.

Sure include the 3gb I don't care, you might run into issues with it limiting over the 4gb but maybe not and you'll save quite a bit as well. Game looks like it wants about 4gb though so will probably have some issues @ 2560x1600 that OP uses. Feel free to suggest that though.

How important is power draw /heat /noise in mATX?

I was under the impression that because of much less space, this is important. 30-40 Watts can produce a lot of heat.

Unfortunately this is unknown right now as the directx 12 patch could improve amd's performance enough to pick them or close the gap amd faces right now when it arrives but no one knows when that could be.

If you are not worried about directx 12 or want to play it right now then the 1060 is the clear choice.

It's always a issue when these new gen cards are just being released and it can take time for things to settle but you can only pray to the tech gods they side with you.
