My system is FM2 based w/ 1866 DDR3RAM:
A6-6400K 4.1 GHZ APU w/ Radeon HD 8470D/192 Shader Cores/800 MHz/DX11
was wondering if I should pop this guy in as a discrete GPU:
Radeon HD 4850 1GB 640 MHz/256 bit/800 Shader cores/ DX10.1
Any comments?
I am a bit confused by your post, but if I am understanding you correctly, you are considering adding the 4850 to a system already running the 6400k. I assume your question is if it would be better for gaming.
It might be faster, but at the expense of using a lot of power and not having dx11 capability. So some newer games would not be playable at all.
What is the power supply in the system you have now? If you have a pre built system, you will probably have a weak power supply. If you have any kind of upgrade budget, you would be better off adding; a newer discrete card like a HD7770/7850 or 7750 if you have a weak OEM power supply.
Luckily, prices are really good on those amd cards right now. You should be able to get a 7770 for around 100.00 or less.
I think the 4850 is some 20% faster than the 6800K IGP...
so it must be a huge difference compared to this.
I've never seen a DX11 game that did not have a DX9 option. Games will remain playable, but he'd be limited to their DX9 code path.It might be faster, but at the expense of using a lot of power and not having dx11 capability. So some newer games would not be playable at all.
OKOnly 20%?

Even with Crysis 3, there is a DX10 patch/hack. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Crysis-3-Directx-10-patch-by-Deviance/1387762274782365many games will run in DX10 (like BF3/4), the only big title I can think of which is DX11 only is Crysis 3, but maybe I'm wrong.
Only 20%?
More like twice as fast, no?
The GT 640 beats the crap out of the 6800K according to this http://www.anandtech.com/show/7032/...-gpu-on-the-desktop-radeon-hd-8670d-hd-4600/2.
The 6750 (aka as 7750 rebadged) is pretty much the same as a 4850 and that beats the crap out of a GT640.
To the OP - yeah use that 4850.
Something like a 5770/6770 or 7750 would be the minimum worthwhile purchase, if you have a card already, then that is a different matter. Just a 4850 is old, and doesn't have the features a 6800k apu graphics core has, such as, DX11 etc etc.
OK
just checked some old TPU reviews, 4850 is equivalent to 80% of a 5770,
a 7750 is equivalent to 99% of a 5770
the 6800K IGP (with 1866 ram) is equivalent to 50% of a 7750 GDDR5... so not twice, but a big gap.
considering it's based on older games, and AMD does not release newer drivers constantly for things lower than 5000 series, I think my 20% are not THAT far for 6800K with new drivers and 2133 memory. oh well.
anyway, it's clear that a 4850 is MUCH faster than the IGP with only 192 sps
frozen -
I have the 4850 from a previous build and yes, I want to add it for more gaming performance. Want to play some fairly new games (up to 2009/10ish), most of them not DX 11.
I built this box and it has an Antec 550W PSU w/ 6 pin for GPU - so I'm good there.
I realize the GPU uses more power - about 125W idle and 250W load.
Guess I'll try it out and and see how it goes.
My original aim was to lower noise/power usage, so I may end up sticking w/ the APU after all Was just that the APU couldn't handle some games w/ graphics up.
Was looking for some opinions.
Thanks Durv for the comment.
