GPU Prices are crazy... what's reasonable for a 1070 or 1080?

You must not spend a whole lot of time here.

Is PC gaming dead? No. Is it hurting? Yes. I've seen several posts across multiple forums of people looking to build and can't find a decent GPU at a reasonable price. This is directly related to the health of PC gaming. If you think otherwise, you're pretty clueless.
How bad is PC gaming hurting? I play on Linux and the two most demanding games I have off the top of my head are Mad Max and Shadow of Mordor. One game which I don't have is DUEX EX: Man Divided is demanding enough that I would need to upgrade to a 1070 from my 970 to play at 2560x1600. And there more demanding AAA titles coming to Linux as well.

Hard to quantify "how bad" It's quite simple to deduce there is an impact though. We have threads where people are looking to build a gaming PC but are being priced out due to mining. This is a detriment, not a benefit to PC gaming. We even have YouTube bloggers making videos about it.

I'm stuck on this damn 7850 and 1280x1024 monitor. Doesn't really handle Fallout 4, and completely chugs on Conan Exiles. I want a 580 damnit, but no, they all shot up to £320 up from £200.

A real bummer, sounds like you need to upgrade but this a really bad to that due to GPU prices. Would you be happy temporary with a 1050Ti?

A 1050ti won't be as big an upgrade, doesn't support Freesync (them monitor prices), and won't be as primed for Direct3D 12/Vulkan games as AMD's cards.

Until NVidia supports Freesync and hardware scheduling, they're not getting my money.

Buy a 1080 Ti for $630-670 every single day over a 1080 at $500-50. 50% more GPU for less than 50% more money almost never happens on the high end like this. Also the 1080 Ti is ridiculous fast

I was surprised about this recently. It's been a long time since I've purchased a video card (for gaming) and haven't had a need for anything high end at home. I decided to build a new dedicated computer for my home theater that supports 4K HDR and MadVR. MadVR is highly GPU dependent and you need a 1060-1080 for decent performance. I ended up buying a higher range 1060 6GB overclocked card because the pricing on the 1070 and 1080 seemed ridiculous! I can still run MadVR at high settings and the cost vs. benefits were absolutely not worth it. Prices are crazy though.

see lots of miners moving to 1080tis for density. wonder how long till those are in short supply too..

I thought ASICs had eclipsed GPUs for mining a while ago... what happened?

for btc and litecoin asics are the thing but some coins are designed to be asic resistant (ie, memory hard). for those coins gpus are used to mine. ethereum and zec are the ones i usually mine with my gpus.

Yep, I've got 2 End of Summer Rigs that I want to build, as I haven't been in the gaming desktop scene in years (never had the money for a good gaming rig until these past couple of years). I'm actually trying to move out of console into the PC Market.

But I'm not going to spend 90% more (!) to get the same performance now I could have just 3 months ago. Especially since I need to buy 2 of them. So for now, I continue to be a console gamer. If this is the "new deal", then I'm not even sure I want to come back to PC Gaming when comparing what a high end console can do vs. a PC in the same price bracket (alongside the "no-hassle" aspect).

PC Gaming to average joe is a really hard sell right now when decent "console level" GPU experiences cost more for just the GPU than the whole console.

I started seeing 1080 Ti cards going out of stock a few weeks ago. I took a look just now, and it seems like stock is a little better, but there are still a number of cards that are either not available or marked up quite a bit.

An interesting (to me) observation with this mining craze affecting PC gaming... This may be purely coincidental but Sony has really been stepping up it's free games every month for their PS+ subscribers. While they typically give away crappy indie games, this summer has seen several AAA titles. August subscribers get Just Cause 3 and Assassins Creed: Freedom Cry. While it's likely more to do with the fact it's Summer time and school is out, it's also good timing to lure potential PC gamers to console given the current state.

I checked Newegg last night and the prices on the 1060 and 1070 GPUs at least have gone down. Hopeful AMD GPUs will follow suite.

How long did the price hike with AMD's 200 series last? Should give us an idea on how long we've to wait for the 580's to come back down in price.

What makes you think ASICs can't be developed that are geared towards Eth mining?

Because the cost to develop such an ASIC and the cost per unit would mean it is better to just buy an AMD or nV GPU. You need, at a minimum, 4GB of GDDR5 or better.

Market fluctuations in price can put a halt to a people getting into mining if the price takes a sudden drop.

I'm still kicking myself for not picking up some 470s when they were going for $130.

Found a couple graphs showing the price ranges for the xfx 290:

It took 8-9 months for the price to go back to MSRP after the mining craze started. If AMD is going to go through that again, we're fuddled up our whoopsydaisy as consumers. We need cards damnit.
