GPU sag killing 2080TI cards

And this is just the 2080TI. Imagine what'll happen to that brick-surfboard that is the 4090.

Sizes of these cards are simply out of control. I personally only buy compact cards that don't extend the width of my motherboard.

Big GPU coolers are not gonna go away anytime soon either. It almost makes sense for cases to be built for motherboards to lay flat, but a nice bracket is fine.

My old Z97 system is on its side since it needs gravity to keep GPU in. There is no clip left on motherboard, plastic is getting brittle from old age.

The kids on PCMR use action figures, Legos, stuff like that, as the brace. They make it fun, which is sort of inspiring. I think I am going to see if some of the McFarlane Halo collection my son has in storage from the 2000s, are the right height for my RX 6800. Haveing a Grunt or something holding my card up, would look kind of cool. Never too old to have some fun with the hobby. Maybe Commander Cody or Vader; he has some cool Star Wars stuff from back then.

I use support brackets even on small GPUs like 6700XT. Even on such a small GPU you can see it bends a little bit so... it's just common sense to use brackets.

Oh how clever. I remember you and I discussing your son but I had no idea you had other children. Got any photos of your others kids builds with the legos or whatever toys they've found to use as a brace support? I was using brace supports going back to the early 00s because I could see a difference in the levelness of the cards at the far outer corner. I opted for a used up kitche towel cardboard dowel in those days. I'd run some electrical tape around it to make it neater looking ant hold up its form. Once peformance cards began using heavier heatsinks I switched to cheap wooden dowels or whatever scrap material I could find around the house or trim parts from home depot cut up and sanded down with a bevel before being painted using a non smelly spray.Even now I'd prefer a long wooden dowel cut up rather than some of the fancy tension strings or metal bars with pegs on them to avoid any short circuit.

You would think the gigantic multi slot cooler would act as the physical support for the GPU.
Depends on how the cooler is mounted. Some don't attach the cooler well to the PCI bracket plate, so there is a lot of ability to sag.

WHAT?! OH, YEAH...DELTA FANS ARE THE BEST!

WHAT YOUR FLYING ON DELTA? COOL!

(lol... sarcasm for those lost... horizontal cases are notoriously loud under most production, except a very small HTPC varient niches.)

The whole "PCIE card" shape doesn't make sense anymore with how big cards are now. Apparently the 4090ti has a PCB that is parallel to the board.

For current models, AIO cards are the way to go and are half the size of the air cooled versions. A Lego support bracket might work, it's another hobby of mine and I have a ton of bricks lol.

Yup, the "perpendicular PCB with edge connector" made sense in the AGP days, when cards were low enough power that they could draw power from the slot and be cooled passively, or with a tiny fan. Now we're pumping hundreds of watts through ugly cables dangling in our case and causing airflow issues, and using coolers bigger than an entire games console to dump all that heat into our badly proportioned cases. The ATX standard was never designed for this.

There's a reason why Nvidia, AMD and Intel have all moved to a mezzanine card for their data centre GPUs! Hopefully we'll see a similar shift in the PC space. The whole physical architecture of the gaming PC just makes no sense any more.

A few days ago I upgraded from a GTX 1080 Ti to an FE RTX 4080. I'm using a Meshify-C case. I don't see my card sagging currently but I didn't look carefully for sagging and it's only been a few days since I installed it, however, for peace of mind I would like to add some support to the card as it's a heavy card and because of the review posted in this thread. I have 7 cm clearance between the power supply shroud and the 4080's heatsink. This one is a little too tall even at it's lowest level and it's the small version. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09FNY1RLM/ref=twister_B09FS817TB?_encoding=UTF8&th=1 Is there another one of similar design that is adjustable and that the lowest level is around 6.5 cm (I want to be able to move the support for placement without it contacting the heatsink before adjusting it to the correct level)?

2.5 cm to 13.9 cm: https://www.amazon.com/Bracket-Magnetic-Graphics-Support-Adjustment/dp/B0BK3S72SN/

EDIT: This one starts at 6.7 cm: https://www.amazon.com/EZDIY-FAB-Support-Graphics-Adjustable-Aluminum/dp/B09NB9MSWF?th=1

4.6 cm and above: https://www.amazon.com/Antec-Support-Graphics-Addressable-Connector/dp/B091BRV8Y8?th=1

I think I like this one: https://www.walmart.com/ip/Vetroo-V...ations-Easy-Install/1117949928?from=topicPage

Large magnetic base and you can secure the GPU snugly from above and below.

I'd forgotten about that thread from last year. A buddy had a delta fan with a thermalright copper heat sink for his Athlon T-bird I think. That thing was fast and loud. I helped him build it and the first time we booted it up, we looked at each other said "may want to get a different fan".

This is what I did. It's free and you can't see it, and it works perfectly.

tl;dw Take one of the PCI slot brackets/covers you removed from the case when installing the GPU, and use it to double (or triple) up on the bottom bracket that the cooler rests against. It will push the GPU up to level and no sag! I had probably a bit more than 1/4" of sag with my 6800XT until I tried this.

I have a case with a horizontal motherboard, no GPU sag (or CPU socket sag either). Sadly, there are very few cases like that one anymore and I am hard pressed to find something remotely like it.

There are some mITX cases that still have a horizontal configuration, and maybe a few mATX. It doesn't seem super popular from mATX and up because the footprint just becomes so much larger. The larger cases seem to resort to riser cables and horizontal mounting solutions only for the GPU to try and combat the GPU sag issues.

I have a dead 2080 Ti FE so I should watch this. But it never really looked like it was flexing? Weird

For my 4090 I switched to a rack mount case so the card is under less stress.

You know one time i did build a PC for a married buddy of mine.
I used a GPU sag bar.
I ziptied a barbie to it.
As a joke made it look like a pole dance.
Even had the RGB lighting inside.

To my amazement...
The wife ended up loving the PC more and stole it.

EDIT: lemme ask if my friend has any pictures of the machine.
