Right now I have an Asrock B450 Pro4 MB. I want to upgrade my CPU to an AMD Ryzen 7 5700X3D. I will be gaming at 2560x 1440 with settings as high as possible - I currently have 16GB og RAM as well. At that resolution, should I get a 4060 or 4070 GPU...? .
Thanks for any advice!

For 1440p never get a 8gb vram card

Bare minimum 4070 (with upscaling)

Or better 4070 ti super

You can also wait for 5070 option. That might be what you need

Currently the Battlemage 580 is better value than the 4060, if you are feeling adventurous, but is more of a 1080p card.

4070/4070 Super or 7700XT/7800XT are the current best options IMO. In about two weeks the landscape is likely to shift, but acting quickly on deals you see with vendors with return policies that work for you might be the best way to hedge your bets.

As others have mentioned, anything 8 or 10 GB should be dead to you.

I just read this:

Yes, a GTX 4070 will technically work with an ASRock B450 Pro motherboard, but you will likely experience some performance limitations due to the B450 chipset only supporting PCIe 3.0, which could bottleneck the full potential of the powerful GTX 4070 graphics card; it's generally recommended to upgrade your motherboard to a newer model with PCIe 4.0 support if you plan to use a high-end GPU like the 4070.

What if I dont want to up grade MB...which GPU should I get?

Thanks again!

That’s nothing burger.

There’s plenty of tests out there showing a x16 PCIe 3 slot is plenty. The 5700x3d has enough PCIe lanes to drive the board at full performance, too.

If you want to burn another $100 get the 4070 Super an actually performance increase

If you really want the speed of the PCIe to not matter get more vram. 6800 is a great choice on sale for less than $400, 7800xt or 4070 Ti Super (16GB).

Go for 16gb vram cards if you don't have pcie 4.0 mb

Probably the 4070 ti super or 7900 gre / 7800 xt

So you think I would be ok with that processor and GPU on my current MB?

Thanks again!

100%, especially when you update your bios and enable “smart memory access” or as it should be known, Resizable Bar. Any bios that supports the 5700x3D will also support that feature.

The 4070 has 16pcie lanes which at full 3.0 speed is going to provide a lot of bandwidth, enough for a Nvidia 3090, for as those were fine because most boards didn’t even support PCIe 4 at launch, and somehow were still awesome

What card do you have now?

You may wish to consider upgrading your system RAM to 32GB as well. A lot of games now are recommending 32GB as the general baseline, especially considering background processes. Luckily, DDR4 is still fairly cheap.

But yeah, in general I would consider 4070S or 7800XT as good options, or wait till next cards are out and see then.

For sure, this is the glory days of DDR4. Buy a nice 32GB DDR3200 kit in two sticks, and sell off the 16GB and have the premium setup for just a $20-$30 investment.

If you want more info on why people are suggesting you dont need to worry too much about the pci express 3.0 being a bottleneck, Gamers Nexus has done great videos on the subject over the years. The video where they compared PCI Express 3.0 vs PCI Express 4.0 performance on a 4090 is worth watching.
In General PCI Express 3.0 does not bottleneck a 4090 except in certain titles, or at low resolution.

The 4070, 4070ti, 7800, or 7900 GRE are all 16x pci express cards. They are all much less powerful than the 4090 so generally will be less demanding (unless you run out of VRAM).
If you buy a card with enough VRAM for what you are doing, and you get a 16x pci express card, you are not likely to bottleneck from the pci express bus.

Its not a direct apples to apples comparison, but, consider that the 4090 is a powerhouse, and really only gets at worst 15% hobbled at 1080p in some games. And less than 2% performance difference pxi-express 3.0 vs 4.0 in 1440p, 4k, and most games even at 1080p.

PCI-e 3.0 is really only going to matter if you're running a gpu with only an 8x connector instead of 16x. That and more vram will help.

I would prefer to wait a month and see what the RX 9000 and RTX 5000 options look like.

PCIe 3.0 vs. PCIe 4.0 is maximum less than 8% performance difference and can only be worse if you go for a card with 8GB or less VRAM.

Yeah at this point I am thinking it is best to wait for the next gen cards.

If you have the dough, wait for the Nvidia Founder Edition RTX 6000 to be release! It called The Blackwell!
