Grade 5 can be either stainless or non-stainless. Our local Lowe's store sells both.

This is a really hot deal if you need or use Grade 5 bolts on a regular basis.

Grade 5 bolts are the "regular" bolts you would find at the hardware store. Grade 8 bolts are hardened for special duty, such as brake calipers, pin bolts on trailer hitches, the studs on your car's wheel hubs. These are great for those everyday jobs. Keep the grade 8s for special duty.

I guess I'll answer my own question after a quick google search.

(SAE) Grade 5 are Medium Carbon Steel - Quenched and tempered: 120,000 psi tensile strength
They are marked with ridges on every other edge (3) of the hex head.

Grade 1 and 2 are Low Carbon Steel: 60,000 psi
They have no markings and are typically what you get at Home Depot or Lowes.

Grade 7 are Medium Carbon Alloy Steel - Quenched and tempered: 150,000 psi
They are marked by ridges on every edge (6) of the hex head.

Stainless Steel bolts have entirely different gradings and markings.
Most grades are around 75,000 psi. Only one as strong as Grade 5.
