Grado Reviews here . . .

here . . .

and here.

This is an "audiophile" type headphone that works well with portables. Most other recognized "audiophile" headphones require a separate amp (or there is no Bass or even adequate volume . . . )

I have never seen audiophiles wax so eloquently about a $70 headphone (it's even better cause it's only $59.99 shipped).
Now some people will chose Cerwin Vega over Magneplanar because they like the apparant bass of the Vegas - but the Magneplanar are the recognized "audiophile' accurate speaker (for example). Some people even like Koss (or Bose).

Speakers and headphones are very subjective. Fortunately, if you do order these, you get 7 days to return them . . . (15% restocking fee may apply).

EDIT: DON'T GET ME WRONG . . . there ARE better headphones. Grado makes better headphones. But this is one you can stick on your Walkman or MP3 player to get a GREAT sound without worrying that you had to max out your credit card to get. It is a bang-for-buck headphone. If you're not sure, try and audition them at a high-end stereo store. BTW, Grado makes an awesome LP stereo cartridge for the price too.

<< one vote for Sony MDR-V6

I bought it for $80 though
>>

One more vote for the MDR-V6. I however, have had these since 1989!!! Bought them right after they came out for $149, I think... Best damned headphones I've ever owned, and I've listened to a lot in the last 12+ yrs. To be honest, I wasn't aware that Sony was still making them.

heh I ordered from here a while back for the same price..

People there were very nice when I called and placed the order.

Off Topic question.. I lost one of the black caps that restrict the headphone from falling out.. do you think theyll send me one for free?

Ive got a question, maybe slightly off topic. Ive been eyeing some sony mdr-cd780 headphone. I tried a pair on and they have to be the most comfortable things ive tried. What I want is a nice set of phones for my computer and lan parties. Comfort is a must when you have these things on for 12 hours. I can get the 780's for about $100, but im worried that they may be too much headphone for a computer system. How do all these other phones mentioned in this thread stack up, and how would they do for computer gear. Im not really worried about size or portability either.

what is the difference between MDR-V6 and MDR-V600? I have the 600s and my dad has the 6. The 600s are old and falling apart though...the 6s have more base but the mids and highs sound more muddled

the v6's are a *much* better pair of cans.
the 600 was supposed to be an updated model of teh v6 (so i hear).
The build quality and sound quality are far from what the v6 achieves. the 600 does manage to be perfectly circumaural tho. this can be done to the v6's with the addition of the velour pads.

I recently bought the Labtec Elite 840 online (buy 1 get 1 free too) for 17$. Very comfy and has super sound for the money. I feel that it's a great choice for people who don't want to spend too much.

I've been pondering getting a pair of these since I heard of them. Finally broke down and bought them. Thanks for the heads-up on the deal.

By the way, I'm using an old pair of Sony MDR-V4's right now--I'm assuming these Grados will sound significantly better, right? The reviewers were all wetting themselves over the sound quality, so I hope it lives up to the reviews.

Are there any store chains that carry these bad boys so that I can try them out ahead of time? I may just have to wander the audio stores around here I guess....

People keep saying that the Grados are good for using on laptops. Is it good for desktop listening as well?

the sr-80s are very well made phones, they employ a simple but stout design... i think they are a work of art. the Sony V6 phones apparently are identical to their 7506 headphones, just rebadged. I like both the Grado phones and the Sonys... I think the Sony's are more balanced overall, but I think the Grados are cooler and better made. You can't go wrong with either.

i reviewed both here - http://music.multimedian.com/reviews/headphones.html and http://music.multimedian.com/reviews/7506.html

<< Would these be an upgrade or downgrade compared to the HD535's that I have? >>

It would be a different character of sound. not necessarily better or worse.
In my opinion, sennheisers are far more 'accurate' than grados.

Thanks for the fixed link. I didn't realize there was such a bunch of headphone fanatics. From getting lost in their forum for awhile, I find the Grados are perfect for rock music (and portables) but not so perfect for gaming (imaging problems).

Still it's gotta be better than my $10 Sonys for gaming and I am only away from my Klipsch promedias for 10 weeks (in Hawaii) . . . I'll survive somehow.

onegauss:

Unless there is some reason that you have to have wireless phones, I would go with either the Grados or Sonys over the ones you linked. The Grados or Sonys will be far less bulky (comfort is very important for headphones) and substantially better sound. Are cheaper too.

Good place for headphone info and reviews is www.headwize.com, especially their forums.

In general, I found I prefer headphones when listening to instrumental music like guitar, piano and violin etc. What headphones lacking is the ability to produce deep bass. I tried headphones with ducted canals which improved the bass responses somewhat. Anybody tried electrostatics earspeakers? You will be amazed. Price is steep, plus that you need an amplier to drive these. These also are lousy in producing bass. Otherwise it is like listening to music from CD vs. sound from FM radio.
