I've never bought higher end headphones before (I know, these aren't top end - but compared to the average consumer headphones...) I do have a set of Koss Portapros that are a few years old, and they're great. But these Grados...I don't have the words.

For years, I resisted MP3s and such because of the loss of audio fidelity. With these headphones, my iPod sounds absolutely magnificent. INCREDIBLE.

Sennheiser HD-555 were very synergistic with my Dad's first generation iPod Nano (don't need headphone amp like Grado). Different house sound than Grado, though.

You don't need a headphone amp with the Grado SR60 or 80 either. I was going to make one for my HD-595, but I never got around to it.

Congrats on the SR-60! I felt that way when I got my SR-125s. But then, they are not being used much anymore since I got my stereo :/ My stereo just sounds so much "there" than the SR-125 which is somewhat fatiguing (they push on my ear lobe weird which makes them physically hurt after 30 minutes).

According to what I read, the 60's didn't need an amp, and all the other models did (I haven't heard them, so no argument with Muadib). Also, I understand the 60's and 80's are extremely similar, with the 80's having a little more bass. I suspected that the 60's would have enough bass for me, and I was right. I am not lacking in any way with these headphones.

I had gotten a pair of SR80s and while they sounded pretty damn good I couldnt justify the cheesy build quality for the price. Plus they are too open. I play my music fairly loud and they just disturbed everyone. I sent them back. I figured I could just get speakers if I wanted the world to hear. Really though, they just felt too cheap for me.

I refuse to even try them. While the look has grown on me, I hate supra-aural headphones and I see way too many people complain about the comfort (as in I can't listen to it for more than an hour because my ears start to hurt so bad that I can't stand it). While I do admit that is bad to not even give them a listen and make up my own mind on them, there's plenty of other headphones worth trying out so its not like I have no reason to. With the A900s I had, I oftentimes would forget that I was wearing them and had no problem listening for hours on end (in fact the comfort actually made me listen to them more). I've yet to find another headphone that is as comfortable (although most I try are plenty comfortable themselves). I want to pick up another pair to see how I like the sound of them now.

No hot deal, just finally decided to get something of high quality. I was looking at Sennhauser, and saw several people mention Grado. Then I read some reviews and decided to jump.

They seem very comfortable to me. Maybe some people don't like the simply design, or the fact that they leak sound. But the clarity is unmatched for the price.

Congratz on your new cans...I've had mine for about 1 year, and love them. Just one question, does the Sennheiser hd-555 require an amp?

Its those first few days, weeks, months that people will complain. It can carry on for years if they use multiple headphones that are circumaural like most Sennheisers, Beyers, AT's and Ultrasone.

Using mine right now. Yay for Gradowagon! They sound awesome.

By the way, Grados are supposed to be the best-sounding headphones you can get if you don't have an amp. All Grados (at least up to the GS-1000) are 32ohm, which is much lower than other headphones like Beyers, Sennheisers, or AKGs.

Enjoy your new addiction

After lots of dinking around with headphones, I finally settled on the Sennheiser HD-570s. Slightly older, open-air model...very very comfortable. Like, all-day comfortable. I got rid of my 650s over the 570s mainly for the comfort.

I had bought my roomate a pair of cheap headphones that had garnered some attention on Head-Fi for having sound (and looking like Audio-Technicas) beyond their $20 price. They broke after a few months and he was looking for a replacement. I tried to steer him towards some nice ones (all $100 or less) but he ended up just going with some cheap RCA or other brand. I really should learn my lesson about giving out advice to my friends since none of them actually listen to me (and often times feel the repercussions for doing so).

You tried the 555's? Many people have said they're the comfiest headphone on the market, like having 2 pillows gently caressing you skull while you listen to music.

After researching a bit I ended up buying a pair of Beyerdynamic DT770 Pro's (80 ohm version). They're very comfortable even after extended use and sound great ,I also like how they can dish out deep bass without sounding muddy. They have more of a 'flat' sound on the upper end (which I prefer) compared to my previous Sony cans which had a very harsh high end.

I also bought an amp to get the most out of them but it was well worth it.
