Hello guys, I graduated in 04... and tried to get into a graduate school a few months after my graduation.

I went to my dean (who was also my prof prior to his promotion) and he recommended that based on my GPA (which wasn't high) that I either KILL my GMATS (700+), or get some work experience before I utilize his recommendation letter.

I didn't kill my GMATS that winter of 04... so I figured I'd get some work experience.

Not too proud of what has happened w/in the past 2.5 years though because I lost sight of my business school goals. I was more focused on finding a job that I would "want" to do the rest of my life.

Here I am... now, on my 3rd job since graduating (8 months at my first job... ~1.5 years on my second job... and ever since w/ my 3rd job)

I don't have a LONG TERM experience w/ any one company since I was experimenting a lot, and actually took this 3rd job because of a pay raise (vs. looking at my long term goals of graduate school and sticking w/ my second job).

Anyways, a revelation occurred this weekend and now, I want to focus on getting my MBA FULL TIME.

I want to ask if my "job-hopping" will look bad on my part, and if I still have a chance of a decent business school if I "kill" my gmats?

MBA schools look at a few things: what you did since you got out of undergrad (work-related and other activities), GMAT, and letters of recommendation. They will look at your grade point, but to a lesser extent the longer it is you've been out of college.

I don't think that job hopping will reflect bad on you if you can come up with the positive experiences you had at each. And anyways, most people these days average 6+ jobs in their lifetimes. If it's been diverse work experience, it'll probably help you more. However, I wouldn't tell the school you switched your job because you wanted to get paid more.

I talked to someone who got his MBA from Wharton a few months ago and he said to wait until I'm 5 years out of undergrad and get a 700+ GMAT for a top tier school. Also, take a look at the other activities you're involved in. Being involved in the community and other things can really help out because it gives you something unique to put down on your application.

Job hopping is generally frowned upon as it indicates lack of focus and clarity. If you have sound reasons for quitting your job AND do a good job of conveying it, then you should be ok. One other thing B- Schools look for leadership skills i.e. things you started with your own initiative- optimized processes and built systems at work out of your own initiative and not because your boss asked you to.. these are some of the things B Schools look and good luck with the GMAT remember the GMAT is only to check if you the aptitude to take the tough academic regimen and your GMAT score while important is not going to be the decider so work on other things.. think about how an MBA will help you grow.
