This is a poignant, beautiful movie, maybe the best film Eastwood has ever done. The characters are fully drawn, believable, and resonate true human emotion. I at first was put off by the idea of seeing a movie about an old racist, but when I saw the numbers of people attending the screenings, I thought there must be something there, so I went to the Arclight in Hollywood, where the theater was packed. Crusty old Kowalski, a Korean war veteran, now living in run down Detroit, hates the Vietnamese immigrants that have moved next door to him. As time goes on, he gets to know them, and the bond that forms is wonderful, and spiritual. There was not a dry eye in the house when the movie ended. I won't give the ending away, but suffice it to say this is a truly wonderful story, one that you will love and tell your friends to see. If you're looking for one of those great movie experiences that so rarely comes along, you'll not find a better film to see than this.

i'm sorry but i find that LOL'able.

the "bond" that forms came out of nowhere and was so forced and felt so damn fake. he was even calling them racist names after this "bond" had been created, and the Hmong people were still laughing at it as they did initially.

and you think the Hmong people were "believable"? they were probably the worst actors i've ever seen on a big screen ever. that scene with the boy locked in the basement where he's banging on the door was almost painful to watch it was acted so bad.

and the ending isn't a huge surprise or anything, it was pretty damn predictable imo.

Well, popular opinion would seem to disagree with you...as do I.

What movies have you seen that you thought were great?

purbeast0 has a propensity to call anything bad acting.
I actually thought the Hmong's were spot on. Take a look at any akward asian kid lacking social skills that isn't a gadget geek. They pretty much nailed it.

It's been in the top 10 in terms of box office performance for the past month or so. Might come out sooner now thanks to the brush off given by the Oscars.

Meh... The story was ok. The acting was terrible. The gross symbolism was too much to bear. (They laid him out like Jesus at the end... ugh) After seeing it I really didn't get all the 'best pic of the year' buzz that was circling around it.

Rather ironic that a bigtime flag-waving racist--which Eastwood clearly plays in the movie-- shows no loyalty to his own family.

Definitely a good Clint movie. I've heard talk that this may be his last one for acting, and if it is, he went out with a bang. It reminded me of his Dirty Harry days.

This was the first movie for pretty much all of the Hmong actors, so that's why the acting was sub-par. Tao(the kid Walt took under his wing) is from Fresno.

Yeah... Yum Yum... yeah... nice girl... nice girl, very charming girl... I talked with her... yeah. But you, you just let her walk out right out with the Three Stooges. And you know why? 'Cause you're a big fat pussy. Well, I gotta go. Good day, pussycake.

He was probably the worst but I wasn't sure if it wasn't just his part or him. But "dragon lady" was pretty good. I liked her character.

His family wasn't loyal to him, only acknowledging him when it was convenient for them. That said, I can't STAND idiots who think that "family," or even friendship for that matter, is a reason to EVER treat someone as more important than someone else. If my brother pissed someone off and got in a fight, I wouldn't stick up for him unless he was justified in what he did. Period. If you endanger me with your problems, I'm not going to be OK with that just because you are family.

If a friend did something and deserved to go to jail for it, you'd better believe I'd let it happen... no lying or covering up for a mistake they made that was out of my control. If a so-called "friend" puts you in that situation, you need a new friend. If a family member does it, it's their problem. Seeing families defend dead-beat drug dealers and killers just because of some blood relation INFURIATES me... Casey Anthony's parents, for example.

Tell me about it. Her canned responses to the street thug were the worst. Having her snarky replies memorized, she spoke WAY too fast without even hesitating for realism. It was back and forth RAPID FIRE and extremely obvious in that scene. They should have tried to compensate in editing or something.

I watched The Wrestler right after Gran Torino. The Wrestler is the only thing that redeemed my night after the awful acting that I witnessed in Torino.

i agree. the wrestler was way better than gran torino.

You all never explain why though or who had bad acting in Gran Torino.

every asian in the movie was a horrible actor. CE was awesome, but everybody else was shit. Good movie though

Totally agreed. The only fun parts of the movie for me were hearing Clint calling it "***** food" and kicking the crap out of gangsters. I thought it was mostly boring.

It wasn't bad but the girl's performance reminded me of a highschool play. Tao's worse part was when he banging on the basement door.

I thought it was kind of silly whenever they would play the army drumroll during some of Eastwood's confrontation scenes.

Just saw it last night myself. Yes, Sue's and Toad's acting was bordering on horrendous, but the rest of the asian actors were decent and, of course, CE was awesome as usual. Movie was pretty good.

With the exception of Heartbreak Ridge, has CE ever been in a bad movie?
