Meh... The story was ok. The acting was terrible. The gross symbolism was too much to bear. (They laid him out like Jesus at the end... ugh) After seeing it I really didn't get all the 'best pic of the year' buzz that was circling around it.
Rather ironic that a bigtime flag-waving racist--which Eastwood clearly plays in the movie-- shows no loyalty to his own family.
EDIT: Oh yeah back to the point of the thread . . . my brother introduced me to this film and I loved it. I'm not an Eastwood fan for the most part but we had fun watching it.
His family wasn't loyal to him, only acknowledging him when it was convenient for them. That said, I can't STAND idiots who think that "family," or even friendship for that matter, is a reason to EVER treat someone as more important than someone else. If my brother pissed someone off and got in a fight, I wouldn't stick up for him unless he was justified in what he did. Period. If you endanger me with your problems, I'm not going to be OK with that just because you are family.
If a friend did something and deserved to go to jail for it, you'd better believe I'd let it happen... no lying or covering up for a mistake they made that was out of my control. If a so-called "friend" puts you in that situation, you need a new friend. If a family member does it, it's their problem. Seeing families defend dead-beat drug dealers and killers just because of some blood relation INFURIATES me... Casey Anthony's parents, for example.
You must not have brother(s) or don't have a good relationship with them. Hell, my brother and i didn't speak much until 3 years ago and even when we weren't as close . . . family is family. Yes, there is a line that can be crossed but as far as I'm concerned I'd at least get him the fuck out of there if he was in trouble. He could be slinging crack and I'd have his back if at all possible. Of course I'd try to remedy the situation beforehand . . .
Anyway, I guess I'm just glad you and I aren't siblings.
