Yeah I agree the main girl's acting made me cringe several times. Her timing was awful and it felt forced like someone said before.

Phenomenal movie, horrible acting.

Toad's forced speech and eye movement was not effective at all.

Clint was badass as usual.

I'm generally never a person to use the word overhyped, because it seems to be the most trite of comments thrown against any movie that gets attention.

Unfortunately, I thought the acting in this movie was absolutely horrible. Not just bad, but horrible. The girl and the boy had some of the most unconvincing performances I've seen since... well, I can't remember. The story itself isn't that interesting, it's predictable and it's full of attempts to tug at stereotypes to elicit the emotion in the movie.

Clint was ok. He was the only redeeming quality in the movie, and his performance against the other lames just came out awkward.

My little diatribe aside, I actually enjoyed the movie and would probably recommend seeing it.

Not even in the same galaxy. Benjamin Button is a good film, imo, that has a story with deep character development with little sentimental string tugging. The only criticism I could levy against Button is that it might run a little long.

I have to disagree with you. I thought Button was a poor man's Forrest Gump - almost the same exact story with a gimmicky premise. I did like the movie but thought it was hyped up a little too much. It was a little long but the filmmaking was phenomenal (scenery, etc).

Pitt's performance was pretty good especially as the older person but I don't think he'll win best actor with that going to either Rourke or Penn. My money is on Rourke.

I still can't believe GT and Eastwood got hosed on academy award nominations.

There's probably a reason for that. And to somehow suggest Button was a Gump derivative would elicit equal criticism for Gran Torino being the same trite story line that has riddled movies over the years.

Neither movie was earth shattering, but at least Button has competent acting. There's just no excuse for Gran Torino, imo.

The movie is just okay. Pretty much a "old man" version of Dirty Harry -- a politically incorrect hard-ass sob who finds he has a soft spot in his heart for some down trodden segment of society. Clint should be able to play roles like this in his sleep by now. I guess what was new here is that the gratuitous cursing and use of ethnic slurs was raised to a ridiculous and unnecessary extreme (especially with the barber). I agree that the rest of the cast didn't seem up to the challenge of their roles. There was more humor in the movie than I expected. All in all, I did enjoy seeing the movie; I've always had a soft spot in my heart for Clint.

Hasn't the Academy been good to Clint as of late? I guess the academy thought the acting sucked too or something.

am i the only who thinks clint wasn't that great in this movie? i mean, who grunts like that when they're mad?
loved the story and the movie in general, but i thought the acting was poor throughout. in fact, the best acting were the gang banger civic punks.

gran torino > ben button

**spoiler**
did clint eastwood have lung cancer or something?
me and the gf were having a discussion and we thought that he knew he was going to die anyway, so he might as well die for a cause.

Yes he did. (Hence the hacking up blood for weeks, and then the hospital admission form). He knew he was dying anyway. Still takes some stones to face off against a pack of gangbangers unarmed though.

Totally agree. Good movie, bad acting. I thought Toad's acting was the worst, followed by Eastwood.

A bit of trivia...the white irish thug is Eastwood's son.

I found the two to be very similar. Both tell the tale of one guy's life and how it intersects with history. They both feature a romantic plot that starts in childhood and goes unfulfilled for a long time.

I saw Gran Torino today and enjoyed it quite a bit. The role was great for Eastwood - Walt Kowalski is very much like what we might expect of a retired Harry Callahan. I liked the idea of using Hmong unknowns to fill in the cast, but was a little distracted by how crappy the two main supporting actors were. The actor who played Thao, in particular, was just awful at times.

I thought this was a very good movie but can't agree it was "hosed" on Oscar nominations - it's not really that kind of film, and IMO doesn't deserve that distinction. Eastwood could fairly be nominated, but this simply isn't Best Picture material.

My wife and I watched it in its entirety last night and we both loved it. There wasn't a dry eye in my living room and I found myself thinking about the movie for hours afterward.

This sums up my feelings to some extent:

This is a poignant, beautiful movie, maybe the best film Eastwood has ever done. The characters are fully drawn, believable, and resonate true human emotion. I at first was put off by the idea of seeing a movie about an old racist, but when I saw the numbers of people attending the screenings, I thought there must be something there, so I went to the Arclight in Hollywood, where the theater was packed. Crusty old Kowalski, a Korean war veteran, now living in run down Detroit, hates the Vietnamese immigrants that have moved next door to him. As time goes on, he gets to know them, and the bond that forms is wonderful, and spiritual. There was not a dry eye in the house when the movie ended. I won't give the ending away, but suffice it to say this is a truly wonderful story, one that you will love and tell your friends to see. If you're looking for one of those great movie experiences that so rarely comes along, you'll not find a better film to see than this.

i'm sorry but i find that LOL'able.

the "bond" that forms came out of nowhere and was so forced and felt so damn fake. he was even calling them racist names after this "bond" had been created, and the Hmong people were still laughing at it as they did initially.

and you think the Hmong people were "believable"? they were probably the worst actors i've ever seen on a big screen ever. that scene with the boy locked in the basement where he's banging on the door was almost painful to watch it was acted so bad.

and the ending isn't a huge surprise or anything, it was pretty damn predictable imo.
