Since I know some of you play this game, I'll post here as well as software

Ok guys, I finally picked up the game used at EB for $8.95. Damn, what a deal. Ever since beating NFS:U, I've been craving some type of racer, and it looks like GT4 is still a ways off. Anyways, I have some questions for all you GT gurus out there. Also, let it be known that I paided a visit to gamefaqs earlier and the guides were pretty lengthy and didnt seem to asnwer my questions.

1 - Does getting an oil change or car wash do anything at all?
2 - I've played through a few of the bigger cups and have made sure to get all golds to win the car. I've only gotten up to the Miata (2nd series of tounramnets won). I found myself selling the first two cars and using that money and my wins to upgrade my first puchase. Which car do you guys recommend one purchases first and builds up.
3 - Does it make any difference when getting your license to get all gold cups? I've only been getting bronze and silvers. What happens if you get all golds?
4 - Is there any other advise you guys can give me?
5 - What are some of the cooler secrets to unlock in the game? I don't really care about spoilers.

Thanks guys!

You don't need to change your oil EVERY time you drive. I drove the red/white car that kinda looks like the penis machine that the ambiguously gay duo drove around...at least that's what i thought it kinda resembled (notgay). Anyways, if you drive your car a lot, the oil will look black; changing it will make it seem a bit faster. I'm sure if you did the 1000 meter test you'll find this to be true.

As far as car washes, I think it might have a very minimal effect.

About the oil, you need to change the oil after a long race to keep your HP from dropping (noticed a drop when it was black). The car wash is purely for looks when the car loose its shine.

Later on you'll get the chance to pick a car from a selection in the race series. To pick the car you want, save the game on the 9th race, and make sure you have a 11 point lead on everyone. Then just end the race on the 10th (you can race if you want to) and pick the car you want. If you don't get the one you want, load up the game again, this will take you to end of 9th race, and you can exit @ the 10th race again to pick the car you want. The loading gets annoying but its worth the wait.

I started with a Tureno and worked my way up. I raced the easy courses again to get enough money to buy a turbo. The miata is a fine car to use in the beginning, though i had a tough time in the test course keeping up with the Mercedes because of slower top speed. Had to buy some mods to inch my way in to victory.

edit - Like someone said, always change oil when you buy or win a new car. I've gotten as much as 15hp from that little trick. (depends on the car)

A pretty good car to start off with, once you have enough money, is any of the Lancer Evolutions (I like the 5 and 6). Although a tweaked Miata handles pretty damn nicely, and I've gotten one to do around 11:50 seconds in the 400meter (basically a 1/4mile)

Here's a great site about tuning the cars too:

I think you have to register, but it's well worth it. Look for car set-ups by Fumes, he's the best.

I won all my street races with a Subaru (until late in the game) and all my circle races with a viper (until late in the game). Once you are late in the game, it won't matter, you can use any number of rediculously fast automobiles.

Yea, try go get the f90/s in the super speed way endurance race as quickly as you can. It handles so well and accelerates like crazy.

*edit*
Oh and go buy the Gran Turismo Logitech steering wheel on ebay, they seem to sell for pretty cheap. It makes the game a lot more fun (if that's possible).

You get a car. I suggest getting all gold in B to get the Miata, and use some cash to fix it up. This way you don't get stuck with a PT Cruiser or a Trueno.

Also, I would set my street racing car to 100% acceleration (Subaru) whereas my Viper was set for 100% top speed.

I would suggest NOT getting any endurance race cars or other super cars until later in the game. These cars don't have any upgrades / tinkering and absolutely destroy other cars. You will lose a lot of the challenge of the game once you have them. Just IMO.

Automatic is good for the circle races (since you can just hold down acceleration and fall asleep. Manual is better for the street races.

LOL! Good advice here. Plus, you can't always use the cars you win in Endurance for the other series and its a bit odd going back to cars that are so much slower and looser around corners.

I'm driving the Trueno right now! :0 I think I'm going to get gold in the B like you suggested and then sell the Trueno and use the money to upgrade the Miata!
