Gran Turisomo 5: Terrible Driving Game, or Worst Driving Game Ever?

Just curious what you think. Considering it's 2011 I think the game is an absolute joke.

Some background: I'm not much of a console gamer, but my flatmate picked up a PS3 with this game and I played for a couple of hours last night. I am absolutely dumbfounded that such an awful game received so much media attention. It's obvious that the developers were more interested in stuffing the game full of content than in making it a decent game.

It's 2011. It is inexcusable to have a game with absolutely no damage/crash physics. It's inexcusable to have a game with such mediocre graphics. Why is there no in-car view? Why can't I mute the OBNOXIOUS fucking music from within the game? Why can't I change any options at all without quitting? Why does the menu look like someone vomited an Excel spreadsheet all over the screen?

The game has none of the features that make modern driving games great - it lacks the basic special effects like motion blur that give a great feeling of realistic speed. The AI is certainly not the worst in recent memory, but it's still pretty stupid.

How on Earth do so many people gush over this game? Is it just people who have only ever played GT games or something? I don't get it.

Let me just say this before certain apologists come in trying to make this game seem better than it is, all that damage, in car views, and such are only for premium cars and damage only unlocks later in the game. It's retarded. Only Premium cars look good. 99% of Standard cars look like they were copy and pasted from GT4 from PS2 they look so bad. The AI still isn't that good at all, loading times are still bad, there's just so much more to not like about this game that it'll take more than I can fill in the quick reply box. It's really sad that after all the delays and how long the game took, there's still so much damn wrong with it. They figured they could just patch in anything and it'll be fine.

couldn't agree with you more. if they pushed out GT5 sooner it wouldn't be so bad in my book. But the long drawn on dev process and the hype the game was a let down give all Sony put into it.

My biggest issue is after 7 or so iterations the cpu still drives on a track. Seriously?

That was my impression from what I'd read as well. As such, I haven't bothered to pick it up yet. Maybe when I can get it for ~$20-25.

Just read through the official thread, it covers the gamut. Goes from preview hype to launch impressions to questioning some game decisions to a little discussion about the game to LOTS of questioning of game decisions to bashing the game for a while and back to discussing the patches.

I think it's mainly momentum from previous games in the series. It's popular because it's GT, not because it's good.

I'm about 90% done with the game and never want to touch it again. I really don't see how they can make any more of the game besides what they got during the release. At least Forza keeps adding DLC to keep the game fresh.

Because the previous GT games have been good racing games. This one seriously dropped the ball and it shames me that I don't have an Xbox 360 any more to be able to play Forza 4 which I'm sure they won't have to put up with the same crap that us GT fans have.

There are definitely some very questionable design decisions. I've never played any Forza game so I can't really judge against that.

I've never understood the fun of driving simulators like Gran Turismo. If I want to drive a car, then I'll go drive one. If I want to have fun playing a game where you are racing a car, then I'll play an arcade racer. Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit fits that bill nicely.

and i thought the game was a lot of fun, especially the multiplayer. i didn't make a whole thread just to say that but whatever. you have an opinion as do i but whats your point? It's just a video game and smart gamer's rent games first to see if they'll like it enough to pay retail for it.

Some people like to race cars in a realistic fashion that they will never beable to race in the real world. They like it cause its enjoyable for them to do such. whats hard to understand about it?
We have simulations of everything from slot machines, chess tables to war games. Supply and demand

The fun is online with friends, the single player GT mode has always sucked ass, since like 3.

You give your car 20 more horse power than the rest of the field and you win by 2 laps.

I had huge expectation and i was very happy through the first few hours and then i was like...WTF, this is the exact same crap i've been playing for the past 6 years. I only play it every now and then when my friends are online playing it.

I honestly need to give forza a try.

I think the only thing making this game worth owning is the online play, and that has plenty of bugs.

You do know that there are in car views, damage, and you can mute the music from within the game don't you? They may not be done as well as they could be, but saying they aren't there, or that you can't do it, simply out of ignorance, is pretty childish.

I tell you what, playing GT5 made me appreciate Forza 3 that much more. GT5 may be the better "driving" game technically, but Forza is the better racing game. Also, Forza is a lot more intuitive and easier to navigate compared to GT5.

Granted, they've fixed some stuff with GT5, but with such a long development cycle, some these issues should have never existed.

The thing is, I used to LOVE the GT series, and I couldn't get enough of it, but it's been essentially the same game as the previous versions. Polyphony did little to evolve their game into the next generation. And not only that, they makes some brain dead decisions. They keep the licenses, but don't put an emphasis on them like in the past. Then, they have a shit exp system where you barely get any points to advance, yet it dictates your entire progress in the game. It's frustrating and completely backwards.

I agree 100%, I felt Hot Pursuit was a much better game - however, like GT5 I felt it was a disappointment from earlier games in the franchise. The old NFS Hot Pursuit games were muuuuuuch better overall.

I agree, on every part except, I think the new Hot Pursuit is as good as the other ones, but this one just makes me wish I was playing Burnout.

GT5 is just, I can't say disappointment, but I think its basically fully convinced me that I don't enjoy the franchise any more. GT4 was the real disappointment for me, and I knew going in most of the issues with GT5. The problem for me is that, while they've improved many aspects, they aren't as fun as the first 3 for me, and I don't think that Polyphony Digital even wants to make the game people are really wanting. Instead they're trying to do a ton of things, all of them mediocre.
