(If someone already made a gta4 thread, sorry bout that.)

I was playing gta4 on pc for the last three days (latest patches installed). Originally played it on the 360, I am stunned about how much better it is on PC. The looks are better, the environment and audio sounds better...explosions are more detailed, framerate is smoother etc. It is a console port mind you, but Rockstar turned a console port and made it worthwhile by adding higher resolution textures and options for the computer that the console would not ever be able to touch. On my core 2 duo e7200, geforce 240 ddr5 512mb, and 2 gigs of ram, I am damn well surprised that this game runs this good! medium texture settings and high on everything else, no vsync, I get a solid 30fps on my 1440x900 19 inch monitor. Thank you rockstar for not pulling an EA (im looking at you bfbc2!)

By the way, anyone seen the enb mods for this game? They look incredible! Game already looks great

I've been a bit skeptical to purchase this game for the PC as I've read reviews that the GTAIV port to PC has been programmed poorly. But maybe that has been fixed with all the patches and updates! Might consider buying this game now based on your performance.

While I'm also in the camp that BC2 wasn't a good PC port (*puts on flamesuit*), you're kidding yourself if you think GTA4 is a good one. You're using some fairly good hardware compared to the age of the game... yet you're only getting 30fps? Don't you think that's a tad embarrassing? Rockstar is notorious for releasing rushed and sloppy ports that aren't optimized at all and are full of bugs.

So you can praise Rockstar if you really want to, but the underlying truth is that it's just an old game and we can finally run it semi-properly.

I run it with iCEnhancer and the upgraded textures (>7 gig download!) and it looks pretty awesome. Taxes the system though.

We're all entitled to our opinions, but... you honestly think GTA4 is a good port, and BC2 isn't a good port?

Right, the PC version of BC2 was definitely ported over from consoles, but it wasn't a bad port at all. In fact, I'd say it was a very good port. Bad Company 2, although still a fairly demanding game, runs buttery smooth on a decent setup and looks very pretty.

Ask any PC gamer about GTA4 though, and pretty much everyone agrees that it's a shit port. You're correct in that it still runs and looks better than it's console counterpart, but at the same time, but there's no excuse for why it still runs like shit on many people's machines. They've patched it up a little, so it runs a LITTLE better than it did on release, but still... shit. Turn all of the settings up to maximum, including the shadows, and you'll see what I mean. It is NOT an optimized game.

I never had any huge complaints with the way that it ran on my system, although I had a quad core CPU to start with and it seems to run a lot better on quads.

Not saying it was the fastest frame rate ever, but fast enough to be playable.

Yes the port has flaws but I've seen it for sale on Steam for $5. Don't understand why someone would turn their nose up at the game if it's selling for five dollars. If you have fun playing it for two hours then it's worth $5, it's cheaper than going to the movies.

That said, while the game itself looks gorgeous(compared to the old GTA games), and it IS fun, I found it somewhat disappointing compared to the other GTA games. My biggest gripe was that a lot of the missions are just big shootouts with other gangs. I wanted some variety like assassinations or bombings... and there are a few missions like that but most of them are shootouts.
I find the missions in Ballad of Gay Tony are a lot more fun than the GTA IV missions.

The storyline is a little depressing - Niko is a tragic figure.

For what it's worth, my favorite GTA was Vice City.

I am used to gta4 running at 24-30 fps and staying in that limit because I originally beat it on 360. The game runs smoother than that on my pc.

I am used to bfbc2 running at 24-30 fps on and staying in that limit because I originally beat it on 360. The game runs like shit on my pc.

No clue why, it just does. I will admit that they could have done better optimizations on both games. GTA4 gives you better options like detail distance, view distance, car density, night shadows, day shadows, etc. TBH with all the patches, it is a great console port, noting that if your pc is over 9000! you can put all the settings on very high at 1080p or higher.

BFBC2 gives you this: Do you want the game to run like crap? Or do you want the game to run like diarreah. Atrocious console port.

Like i said, I am running texture settings on medium, and running everything else on high, 16xaf, defenition off (it looks more "realistic" once your eyes get adjusted to the blur), and vsync off. 1440x900 resolution too.

I think I'll install it again and check out how it is with the latest patches and some of the texture mods. I've had some major upgrades since I first bought the game on the PC. I do remember it running a lil slushy back then and I ended up shelving the game. The controls were pretty bad unless you had an xbox controller.

jordanecmusic, not sure why you are having so much issues running BC 2. I played the game just fine with an E8500/GTX260 on high settings and 2x AA at 1920x1080. overall I averaged around 50 fps for single player but never played multi.

heck I just fired it up and it plays just fine on my wimpy 8600gt on a mix of low and medium at 1280x960 too. I forced my i5 to use just one core too but even then my 8600gt was main limitation as the framerate did not change much for the most part when using all cores. now the dips were a little lower with only 1 core during destruction because the game does need at least 2 decent cores to play best.

you should have no trouble playing BC2 on medium with your GT240 and E7200. maybe try forcing DX9 as that will take a load off of both your cpu and gpu. if I had to run it on my 8600gt then thats what I would do even though a mix of medium and low played just fine in DX10.

Crappy console port for sure, but the game is beautiful.

I enjoyed it - a solid title in the GTA series. The protagonist figure and NPC's were well written. The overall storyline as well. Missions could have been a bit more focused and varied, but now we're down to the details.

Would have liked if they had made some references to previous titles in the series.

Everyone says that it's a terrible port, but they seem to forget how poorly the game runs on consoles. It runs very smooth on a decent PC compared to the way it runs on consoles.

Cant wait for Arkham city. We would be doing Arkham City to GTA4 Comparisons ...Totally forgot about Prototype. Never played it. Is that any good?

Not sure how it was on the PC, but on the 360 I had a ton of fun with it. Very awesome destructive type of fun. The only downside is that you start a little weak and it's a little slow getting through the city, but once you play through it a bit you get a lot of good powers and can sail through the city pretty easily.

Just hail a taxi if you don't want to mess with driving/flying all over the place.

Reading this thread got me back into playing Ballad of Gay Tony. It really is a gorgeous looking game engine even if it does get bogged down into some low frame rates from time to time. I'm running it on an Asus G73 laptop and it's fine.

Like I said the missions in GTA IV are repetitive - but the amount of depth the developers went into to create the world of Liberty City is just astonishing.

The game is well worth whatever they charge for it on Steam these days, definitely get it.

Interesting note about GTA IV -

I bought it during one of those Steam supersales for $5, but my old PC couldn't run it well enough so I quit.

I just re-downloaded it, and now it not only looks and runs great, but I also get the option to play Episodes from Liberty city. I'm pretty sure I didn't have that choice before.

A nice bonus, I guess.

Just dropping in to say that I have immensely enjoyed GTAIV as well (not so much for the 2 expansions though -superb work they have done in breathing life/self-irony into Niko Bellic-).

I can't understand the hate for it being a console port since I have never played the console version (nor do I play on any consoles) but nevertheless the PC version is IMO a superb game on its own.

I started off really enjoying this game, but after 25 hours of the same thing seemingly over and over, it's just too much work to fire it up anymore.

Ah well. I hear it's like 40 hours long or something like that. Maybe when the rash of other games I've yet to play is over I'll pick it up again.

I've played through it twice and absolutely loved it both times. I played San Andreas three times already!

You might like the Episodes better. No annoying "friends" calling you all the time, no side missions, just story. An they are about 8 hours or so each. I only played Lost and Damned, but it was much better than the main GTA4 game.

tlad and tbogt were really really really good. Quite arguably as good as the actual gta4 story. I wish rockstar would do a full optimization patch.
