Grandmothers Computer Gone Wild

As far as I am concerned I'm at least intermediate in the world of computers, but I don't have much physical experience in troubleshooting. The computer I am currently working on has a problem that I just can't figure out, although I must admit I havn't spent much time on the problem.

You'll have to excuse my group of friends. They waited until I wasn't looking to get a head start on posting the message, then Bombastic Flasher see it as an opertunity to amuse himself. Anyway, the problem is her computer will not shut off. If I shut down manually or with the power button, it is only a matter of seconds before the computer boots back up on its own. I have done all that I know to do, seeing as the computer is very old. I contains Windows 98. I don't know if I would need to set some type of jumper on the mobo or if it's possibly the CMOS battery. Thanks.

Yes, I have done that, haha. I think possibly the problem could be that the computer is giving a command to do a warm boot.

Let me guess that it's an old eMachine or Compaq? Known issue with the power supply. It's not a standard ATX PSU. You can live with it, or buy a replacement PSU. Directron.com sells them. Just do a search in their catalog for the model number on the PSU.

Does the BIOS have a WOL/M/K (Wake-On-Lan, Wake-On-Modem, Wake-On-Key) feature? If it does, try disabling these and see if it still happens. Also try removing the power switch and reset pins on the mobo itself and putting it back on. Maybe a loose connection.

I dont know of this problem that the FlyingPenguin is talking about as I've had no experiences with eMachines, but if it the comp doesnt have those WOL/M/K options in BIOS, or if replanting the power/reset pins dont work, I guess it just might be the psu.

You mentioned the pc has W98. There was a patch for 98 concerning shutdown once upon a time. It's been so long since I used 98 I don't know if there is still a site at MS where you can download patches. You might try that before pulling the pc apart. Just a thought.

Most pc bios have a setting for what function you want the power button to perform. Check that setting and make sure it is set to power off.
