Granite Bay on 22. Oct.?

While the upcoming 845PE caught my interest, I must say that the Intel E7205 chipset (formally known as Granite Bay) with it's dual channel 266 DDR sounds like the right thing to mix with a 3.06 P4.

I know that it'll work with the P4, but does anybody know whether the release date of October 22nd is correct? Given the E7205 name Intel is positioning it as a workstation chipset, so does anybody know whether mobo-makers like Asus, MSI or Gigabyte will launch them soon?

Regards....

I believe Gigabyte and Epox have theirs out already... you can find the Gigabyte one on newegg.com... i don't know when Asus will bring out theirs... but i'm waiting for Abit's IT72...

The new boards out are not granite bay. Intel has boards out for sampling, but last I heard, granite bay was to be released sometime around christmas.

An Intel engineer I spoke to at IDF indicated that 7205 boards would not be released until the Nov-Dec timeframe, so take that FWIW.... However, Oct. 22nd may very well be a valid release date for the 3.06GHz P4 (with enhanced HT).

Saving my nickels and dimes for E7205 (Granite Bay)!
I passed on 845D, 845E, 845G, 845GL and I'll pass on the 845PE for the Granite Bay...
If the board is half as good as it's specs suggest, it will rule the P4 DDR boards.

Thanks for the info, senior guy and Tates...

The rumors on the net suggest that P4 3.06 HT will be released in the beginning of November and it sort of wolud make sense for Intel to launch the 7205 together with it to mark who's the boss this Christmas. Granted the 850E is still a very powerful platform, but a lot of consumers shy away from the Rambus (because of price and questionable longevity).

VERY VERY nice indeed, but everytime I start looking for what to buy, there's a new very interesting launch up ahead, so sometimes you just have to forget about what's coming and make your purchase, and just upgrade to something even more crazy down the road Ok, I'll admit this is just me desperatly wanting to get his upgrade asap speaking

I'm going ahead w/ the 845PE. Here's a rough roadmap I hope to follow:

4th Qtr 2002 - upgrade motherboard to a 845PE, overclock to near 3GHz (cost $95)
2nd/3rd Qtr 2003 - upgrade chip to 3.06GHz, overclock to near 4GHz & implement HT (hopefully chip will be < $200 by then)
1st/2nd Qtr 2004 - keep 3.06GHz chip @ near 4GHz, upgrade motherboard to Granite Bay, upgrade memory to dual channel 266 DDR (hope for < $300 total)
4th Qtr 2004 - upgrade chip to 4GHz w/ 1MB cache & oc to 5GHz, upgrade memory to dual channel 333 DDR??

What do you think? This is just off the top of my head. I haven't even looked to see how well the memory throughput will match up to the chip speed. Just nice to see an upgrade path that won't be too expensive to implement each year.

little hazy on the dual channel ddr stuff...here's my delimma:
have 1GB (2x512 samsung 6ns) and everything else but mb/proc...should i wait on DCDDR boards (e.g. GB) or go 845PE now?..main question: will that ram (2x512 PC2700) work in a DCDDR board?..and how long would the wait be?..10/22 would be niiiice.

I'm bumping because I would like to hear an answer to this question as well.

I have 2(exact matches, same company and density) x256 PC2100 RAm. Common, everyday, vanilla Ram and if the performance jump I would get with Dual Channel is significant, I will wait myself

So, I'm assuming you guys want Granite Bay benchmarks? Well, OK then....

Benchmarks would be nice

Mostly I'm looking for assurance that I'm not going to have to run out and buy a new "special-Ram" to use in a dual channel motherboard. I'm really hoping I can drop the 2 identical, common pc2100 ram DIMMs into that granite bay and get dual channel. If so I will wait because I would have the opportunity to go from "lower end" performance in an 845PE to excellent performance (?) with GB.

If not, if new ram has to be purchased, I may just go ahead and get me a 845PE

Evan, I understand that you have to be careful with the information you share with us. However, could you throw me the proverbial bone here and respond to my question about pc2100? From the limited info I've been able to find, some sites are saying GB will release with support for PC2700 and not PC2100. Also the expected release date? I'm hoping those two bits of info are not considered "classified". If they are, I'll stop bothering you and sit on my hands

My quote from previous post:

Ninepepper, there should be no reason why your PC2100 won't work. Frankly, I'd be surprised if it didn't (assuming you've used this RAM before and know it works fine in other boards).

Alright, since Ninepepper just had to bring it up again, I'll go an extra step further and say...you'll get benchmarks within two weeks. Happy?
