yea but ask ANY experienced Asus board owner about how well it regulates voltage....

I'm an 'experienced' Asus board owner and it regulates voltage very well. They are not picky with PSU's and readings are spot on but you have to take into consideration that Asus usually gives a little extra juice ( a 1.75v setting may mean 1.80v for example) than the rated setting.

With intel's granite bay probably only supporting PC2100 DDR, what memory would you advise me to purchase if -

1. No overclocking or very very minimal overclocking. I'm sticking with stock CPU cooling.
2. Want the fastest possible memory settings, I'm thinking Cosair XMS series may be a good purchase??
3. Keep an eye on the future with Intel Springdale/Prescott release, it would be nice to reuse the memory once Intel supports PC2700.
4. Money not an issue
5. Since Granite Bay is Dual Channel, I'm looking at 2 sticks of 512MB memory.

Thanks for answering this, I'm trying to plan my budget out for Christmas!

Thanks I.C.

I was thinking that may be the right choice after reading through NewEgg.Com's XMS offerings. I couldn't see a need for PC3000 or PC3200 since I wasn't overclocking, just looking for verification before purchasing it!

That should serve you very well (actually, XMS PC2100 Cas 2 would work just as well for you in a GB board, but if you're serious thinking about SpringDale, then go for PC2700).

It would be nice if Evan would examine and compare each board's voltage regulators (and their components) in future reviews/shootouts...

Evan, aside from the VR's, can you also compare the quality of the Capacitors and other components? There seems to be wide phenomenon lately that most motherboard failures are caused by low quality capacitors (and components). This would also be helpful on the lifespan of the motherboards since most average household puts a very low priority on PC upgrades and wants their PC to last longer than expected.

A good read on the subject.

That's hard to believe - Intel would be making a big mistake delaying GB, as SiS655 would grab the DCDDR lead.

News to me, although sometimes The Inq hits the nail right on the head, so they could be right. AFAIK, GB boards will be available between mid-Nov and December.

I sure hope so. I've got a couple of sticks of Corsair ram waiting for a board, hopefully the Abit GB7-Ultra.

it's nearly mid November at the moment, how long before we'd be able to find out if GB boards get released before Christmas?

So with the release of GB, there is no point in having PC3200/PC3500, right? Because with only 1:1 ratio hardly anyone will be able to overclock above 166MHz FSB unless you score a sweet chip with a C1 stepping that I have running 2GHz@3GHz, 150MHz FSB, 1.525V. No way anyone will be able to get 200MHz FSB just with the CPU itself. Correct?

granite bay mobo going to be very expensive... some rumours point out, this mobo going to be double price of PE chipset base mobo. I really hope AMD will have hammer out in time so we will have more variety .

The launch date for Placer is now the 18th and Granite Bay will be about a week after that. I guess we're looking at GB motherboard availability sometime in December. Pricing should be around $200-250 for most GB boards, only the Tyan Trinity S2662 may cost as much as $300.

It's interesting that some manufacturers have cancelled their GB projects..........
From: www.vr-zone.com
Some manufacturers like EPoX and Chaintech that have originally planned for Granite Bay solutions have scrapped their plans on mass producing GB boards due to high cost of the chipset and opted for higher spec Springdale chipset instead coming Q1 next year. First tier like ASUS, Gigabyte and MSI will be producing boards based on GB chipset.

I have a question for you Evan - given the delay in the launch of Granite Bay, will this also delay your Granite Bay review? Does the NDA expire on a specific date or does it coincide with the launch of Granite Bay, whenever that may be?

I'll have some type of a Granite Bay review by Comdex time, don't worry.

It'll probably be a shootout, like the 845PE one I did on October 7th.

hmm considering price conscious manufacturers are holding off for springdale it's probably more intelligent of me to go with a PE board and get Springdale when it comes out, rather than going with first gen GB mobo's.

Here's a little something to look at while we're all waiting for the boards to come out
Asus GB Board

oh yeah...one more thing, both evan and kyle(from hardocp) have given us dates that the GB are coming out
well to better clarify that Evan has given a review date in the lastest Motherboard review he did ECS L4S8A (SiS 648) near the bottem

and kyle from Hardocp has given us a release date in the Hardforums Here about halfway down the page.

Looks like ASUS board doesn't have any memory voltage adjustment setting.

New power design

whats that? Is it refering to the VRM's or new type of power supply thats been rumored about?

Is there one that works? We've had issues with the P4T533.
