My thoughts are that the board manufacturers are taking time to add a few more features to the bioses.

I'm a little confused. I planned to build this system, but i don't know if it will work now...

Intel Pentium 4 2.4ghz
2x 256 PC2700 DDR Modules
ASUS P4G8X Motherboard

Will the motherboard still run at dual channel DDR with the PC2700 modules?

Can I overclock to 3Ghz or is that too high?

Yes, that'd work just fine. Shop around for a C1 2.4B, you should be able to hit 3.0-3.2GHz no problem. That'd give you......

- FSB of 167-178MHz
- Dual-channel DDR333-356
- Memory/FSB bandwidth of 5.34-5.67GB/s (Sandra mem bench 4060-4300MB/s)

But you could get lucky with the CPU and hit higher.

Ok. Great. Thanks. But how come on ASUS website, they list the board as supporting only PC2100 and PC1600 DDR-SDRAM? Does that mean its only been tested up to PC2100 or are they just saying that because it pointless to go with DDR333 because DDR266 fills the memory bandwidth perfectly at 4.2GB/s?

Heh. Forget it. Answered my own question by reading page 4 thoroughly. Great info. Have another question though, when is the earliest that a new processor with a higher FSB will be released? Mid-2003?

as for all the memory questions...if the motherboard says you need pc2100 and you have pc3200 there shouldn't be any problem at all running it...just check that the RAM manufacturer/chips are listed as compatible at the motherboard manufacturers website.

your questions are largely looked over and unanswered for good reason...here's an example to help you understand why noone really answers your questions on if it will work: let's say your car has a top speed of 200.23 miles per hour...what your questions look like are you telling us your top speed and asking if it will run on a highway that has a speed limit of 60 miles per hour. PC3200 will have no problem 'slowing down' to a 'speed limit' of PC2100 as long as it's decent ram.

Good news everybody..........

Sorry, I've got Futurama on the brain. Anyhoo, my main trade-only supplier (Ingram Micro UK) has put the Asus P4G8X Deluxe into it's listings at long last!! This is the very first sign of the P4G8X being available in the UK..........

SKU # B99Z430
ASUSTEK / 90-M8L841-E0UAY
P4G8X/DEL/GD SKT478 IE7205 ATX SND LAN 1394 FSB533 SATA10
Price: £124.05
ETA: 18th December

I'm still expecting to get mine in January 2003 but this is a good sign!!

Well, if you add on VAT (tax) and convert to US dollars the price is $229.

But you have to remember that we pay a lot more for our stuff here in the UK..........

(UK prices include tax and £1 = $1.57, % value is difference between UK and US price)

P4 2.4B (+34% higher)
UK Trade Only - $243
Pricewatch.com - $181

P4 2.8 (+31% higher)
UK Trade Only - $496
Pricewatch.com - $380

Asus P4PE-L (+41% higher)
UK Trade Only - $166
Pricewatch.com - $118

Gigabyte GA-8PE667 Ultra (+23% higher)
UK Trade Only - $157
Pricewatch.com - $128

With the UK rip-off factor in mind, the real US price should be a lot lower than $229 though - $190 sounds about right for the US.

Wow $190 US for a granite bay board....they weren't kidding when they said these chipsets will be more expensive....but considering the features it's probably still worth it...

Well, the AnandTech motherboard reviewer Evan said....
the price will initially be steep ($190), this is to be expected with a dual channel chipset, especially one from Intel. Prices will fall though, and we expect motherboards like the P4G8X to get as low as $140 in the next couple of months.
Also, he said the Asus P4G8X was expected to be $190 but the Gigabyte GA-8INXP would be around $15 cheaper ($175). Plus, MSI are supposed to be releasing a cheapo Granite Bay board - the E7205 Master-L(MS-9126), to go alongside their feature-rich GNB Max(MS-6565). I don't know how much that 'budget' MSI GB board will be but I'm guessing $150-160 perhaps? It'd have to be that cheap to get anyone to buy it.

I'm wondering if these delays have any relation to the reported AGP 8X problems that turned up with the Placer chipset.

The issue has been resolved quietly by Intel, and an updated chipset has been released. All current "retail" boards should be shipping with the new chipset (designated "BO").
- 'unamed source' quoted on the news page at 2cpu.com

Updating the chipset at the last minute would drag things out a bit I would think...

More good news from Asus.........
Thanks for your support. Regarding your questions, the P4G8X is currently in MP stage and limited shipments has already begun in the markets you mention. Volume shipments should begin at the end of this month. ONce again, thanks for your support, and feel free to contact me if you have any further questions.

Best regards,
Will Teng

So, P4G8X is in mass production and limited quantities should appear soon. The serious volume looks like being in January 2003 though. I can't believe I actually got a response from Asus!! Good on yer Will Teng!!

Looks like there are 2...1 is $192 and the other is $215....the $192 lacks the firewire, sata, and gb lan.....so neither has onboard sound correct?

Both have onboard sound. The Deluxe board comes with Realtek ALC650 (6-channel) codec, whereas the basic board comes with AC97 codec.

I know no one has really played with the GB boards yet, but I have a quick overclocking question. Would I be able to overclock a P4 2.4B on the P4G8X to 3Ghz without any additional cooling or will it get too hot? And also, if I do plan to overclock, would i be best going with DDR333 rather than DDR266? Sorry, if this has been asked so many times...
