So, I'm having issues with my computer starting tonight. I was trying to play Borderlands 2 when the graphics started glitching. I've had this issue before, but it's normally caused by the graphics card overheating. It wasn't overheating. Then Windows started having issues. Most text was getting replaced by black boxes.
So I rebooted. Seemed okay, retried Borderlands, still corrupted. Rebooted again. Then the initial boot screen ( you have three hard drives and such and such a processor, etc) was covered in rows of yellow dots. The following screen, which is normally text, was half readable text and half garbled text. I hit what should be the windows login screen, and it's black. I hear the startup noise. Reboot again.
Same deal. Black screen, startup noise. I blindly punch in my login. I hit the desktop, which for a few seconds is artifacted to hell and back before it fixes itself. I get a message about the display driver crashing and Windows recovering. Still not working properly.
So, to me, everything seems to point to a graphics issue. Drivers crashing, boot screen (no Windows drivers at that point) corrupted. Is there anything else it could conceivably be aside from the graphics card? Any fixes and/or troubleshooting steps I should take?
System is a radeon 4850 paired with an athlon II x4 635.
