I think nV's answer to the 4870 will be to drop the price on the GTX260 to $300 and probably also the GTX280 to $500ish.

Based on 4850 performance I would expect 4870 to be about equal or slightly faster than GTX260 (like the 4850 is compared to the 9800GTX).

Now, at your resolution of 1680x1050...it's tough to say no to a $170 4850 that you can buy today!

Why is everyone here hyping up the 4850?

From the reviews I've seen... 8800GT > 4850.

PC Perspective (8800GT vs. 4850)

TweakTown (4850 vs. GTX280)

The 8800GT is currently available for ~$150

The 4850 is currently avaiable for ~$200

Spend your $300 on two SLI 8800GT.

Or as they say, wait for the benchmarks of 4870 to pop up. I personally don't expect much of a price/performace killer.

Of course prices will drop eventually on the 4850 from launch prices. So you can wait till they drop. And 8800GT prices will drop.

You are correct, the 4850 beats out the 8800GT, AND the 9800GTX

but only with AA/AF against the 8800GT (for $50 more)

and only slightly better than the 9800GTX (for the same price)

So the 4850 is clearly better than the 9800GTX for the same price, but its a personal thing of whether you want to get SLI for $300 or 1 card for $200.

For sure the SLI for $300 will beat the 4850 with AA/AF. However it is $100 more.

Agreed. This pretty much sums it all up until more cards are released.

Personally, I set up a budget and then spend what I put for that item. If I have 300 dollars to spend and I'm going to spend it right now I'm going to get 2 8800gt and SLI them if i have a SLI mobo.

If I'm going to spend around 200 or if I do not have a SLI mobo, I'm going to get 4850.

However, if i was going to wait a few weeks before I purchased anything then I'd wait to see how the 4870 looks.

Wouldn't surprise me to see 4850 at $150 in a month or so. 2x 4850 would be nice.

I have a Opteron 165 system with an Ultra 500W PSU, 3 gig ram and Geforce 6600.

I'm really contemplating an upgrade to the 4850. Am I going to be bottlenecked by my CPU and/or limited by my PSU to make it not worth the upgrade? Should I just find a cheap Geforce 7xxx or Radeon 19xx?

Why wait? Best Buy has 25% off all Visiontek video cards this week, if you're lucky they might have the 4850 in stock and you can get it/them for $150 right now.

And to ricochet, your Opty 165 should be fine to push a single 4850, especially if you OC it a bit (those chips are highly overclockable, you can probably hit 2.6GHz or higher without much trouble).

The 4850 is $150 at Best Buy now. It is as fast to faster then the 9800GTX for the price of the 8800GT.
