Usage is going to be:

- driving 2 x 1080p monitors @ 60hz initially, but in the future I may want to drive upto 3 x 4k monitors with very good performance and no bottlenecks
- No games, just productivity an software development apps - Excel, Word, Eclipse etc.
- Multimedia : Some minimal video editing, youtube, 4k video playback the usual.

The build is going to be based on Ryzen 7 1700X, 16gb ram

Currently thinking of the GTX 1050 or the GTX 1050Ti. Also considering RX 460. Comparisons between these three for my usage?
Any others?

If you want 4k Netflix playback and do not have Kabylake (obviously you do not have this CPU), then the cheapest will be the GTX 1050 Ti 4GB. 4k Netflix on PC requires (as of now) Kabylake or Nvidia Pascal GPU (1000 series) with 3GB+ of VRAM.

Are those DVI, HDMI or DisplayPort monitors? Many newer cards only have 1 or sometimes not even 1 DVI port. So check if the card comes with adapters if you only have DVI monitors.

Like @crisium said you'll need at least a 1050 Ti 4GB for Netflix 4k (and use the Win10 App / Edge) due to DRM, but otherwise any new GPU can run 4k content and multiple 4k screens.

I'd try to get the 470/570 if possible. Its a such a nice boost to performance for not much more.

Currently due to the cryptocoin mining craze, AMD cards are going for a large markup. For example, RX 480 4gb cards are all out of stock and selling for $300ish on Ebay. I ended up buying a GTX 1060 recently for $200 after rebate.

I was at Microcenter (a computer parts store) over Memorial Day weekend, and the AMD section for graphics cards was basically bare. I would look around but the options at the moment for AMD cards is likely to be limited.

As others have mentioned, a 1050 TI 4gb would be sufficient for your purpose and is currently available for $120 after rebate on Newegg.

I'm not a gamer so even 1050 Ti is probably overkill... but given the price, $120 after rebate may as well get that one

Whatever you get its going to be Nvidia - AMD cards are scarce as hen's teeth at the moment. I've seen GTX 1050 Ti models going for as low as $119.99 at Newegg recently. I'd probably get that.

I'd suggest the GTX 1050 Ti for your needs. AMD GPU's seem to be out of stock at the moment (probably due to crypto miners), so the 1050 Ti sounds like your best choice really.

Do keep in mind, however, most 1050 Ti's have only one DVI-D, one HDMI 2.0, and one DisplayPort 1.4 ports each. You'll only be able to drive three displays with the 1050 Ti. If you want to run more than three displays in the future, the 1050 Ti won't be capable of doing that.

4k video playback does require a bit better gpu and 10bit hevc encoding which is available only with the latest nvidia 1000 series and AMD 400/500 series GPU's.

but whether you go for the 1050, 1050ti or rx 560 its going to work.

my current card is Radeon 6670, I am using dvi and hdmi to connect the two monitors so it's going to be the same setup. I don't think my monitors support displayport chaining. I don't see myself using more than 3 monitors ever

Whats wrong with keeping the 6670 in there? If you aren't doing any gaming don't spend over like $70

I am debating this... to take my 6670 from my old box and see how it works. I am wondering if getting a newer card like the GTX 1050 Ti will make any performance difference in a non-gaming environment such as playing videos, I doubt it as most full HD streams are not exactly much of a big deal for most computers.

For 1080p not much difference. For h.264 or h.265 4K, huge difference.

Yeah use the card you have first, if you notice issues (not network related!) then try upgrading. No reason to spend money if you don't need to

It will, but only at higher resolutions like 4k.

the 1000 series have 10bit HEVC encoding, support HDR and have support for more colors. Its same deal for the 400/500 series on AMD's side as well.

True you are most likely not going to see any difference, but you said you do some video editing, so you will see HUGE performance gains when using H265 encoding. Use Xmedia Recode which supports Nvidia's implementation and you'll go from an hour of encoding about 1 hour movie with your processor with handbrake for example to literally 3-4 minutes.
