Grass Seeding

Of course your other option is sod. It's pretty easy to put down - the work is in the soil prep and ripping out the old grass, but they have machines for that. Sod is $6 for a 2x4 section at HD. I just put down a couple patches that the seed wasn't taking at all. Gotta keep it moist throughout the day for at least 2-3 weeks. My whole lawn was fresh sod 2 years ago and it looked great the first year then the crabgrass ruined a lot of it since I didn't know to put crabgrass control down.

I'll try that. I got that scotts fertilizer with weed control for summer use so hopefully it allows me to seed it after a week.

I specifically mentioned 'It depends on the chemicals' which includes far more than weed killer. Fertilizers high in fast release nitrogen will often prevent grass seeds from growing or kill early growth. Furthermore given that most fertilizer sold during the spring contain pre-emergent and weed killer it was a safe assumption to include those specific chemicals as an example as evidenced by his reply below.

And saying 'Pre-emergent fertilizers will kill all seeds' is not true. Siduron is a pre-emergent that can be used when seeding.

Yeah most people assume when you say fertilizer its just fertilizer and not additives. Obviously you need to take other chemicals with it in to account.. and I wouldn't say 'most' sold in the spring contain these things.. there are plenty that are just plain fertilizer.

I always recommend Lebanon if you can get it. 1528 low nitrogen slow release.. stuff is amazing.

Good call on the Siduron.. definitely recommend for people who are seeding in the spring.

Sunzt wait 2 weeks since your fert has weed killer in it.. and good luck.. its going to be hot by then most likely.

Yeah i just fertilized yesterday and looks like a hurricane might pass by in a few days ...... ug....

I can never tell if my overseeding takes. I guess it does since my yard keeps getting thicker each year, but I never actually notice the short blades when they are growing, or that bright green color.

I was surprised to see yesterday that the seed I put down 2 weeks ago actually took. We had a few 90 degree days right after I put it down, and I thought for sure it would kill it (kentucky bluegrass). I usually put down those green seed protection blankets from Lowes/HD, but this time I just bought some hay and threw it over top. I guess it helped block out the sun and maintain the moisture regardless of the hot sun baking it.
