Webster fixed the spelling of a lot of words that were needlessly spelled the wrong way in English. I see no reason to avoid using the letter j in jail, so I see no reason to avoid using the letter a in gray.

Grey

I have never even seen "Gray" used except for the brand of squash/tennis gear...

Grey & Colour are how things are spelt and used in the commonwealth. Z is also [Zed] not [Zee] ! hehe

People that would agree with the colour being grey:

In short someone else nailed it before:
Colour = Grey
Color = Gray

One is a US spelling, the other is a UK spelling. Half the forum users are probably from the US, a majority of the other half is from UK English countries and the rest are US users who want to feel special by using UK spelling.

it's not quite the same as color vs colour.

gray vs grey doesn't phonetically change the word. it doesn't even raise the ire of my spellchecker as i type this in. (colour does.)

That's probably because it's a common last name. Does it try to capitalize?

My US English spellcheck said grey was wrong. I had to add it to the dictionary.
