I don't understand your comment. This is a very good product as demonstrated by all the comments in this thread. I guess some of us get what we pay for without actually paying for it.

Sorry, my first reply to the attached message issue was wrong. Actually, you can turn on or off that option.

Here's what said in the software.
This message will be attached to your email if you enable certification

Incoming mail is certified Virus Free.

Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free.

One thing you should definitely do with AVG is set the Update Manager to update much sooner than it's default of 30 days. I set mine to 1 day, and it checks for an update every day at a specific time.

This sounds great! I've been using Vcatch, a freebie, thats very good except for the pop-up ad when it checks daily for updates. Goodbye Vcatch!

I can't believe people are switching to using this antivirus program because it's free. AVG in the antivirus industry is known to be crappy anti-viral software. PC Magazine was dead-on in its review. If you want further proof from an unbiased source, check out the Virus Bulletin website at www.virusbtn.com. This is a well-respected and well-known virus testing center/site. Their test results for AVG prove it's worthless. It fails repeatedly in detecting viruses in their tests. HERE is a link to results for various antivirus programs.

I personally use Eset and Norton.

I gotta agree with rocketfan. And just because someone writes a bad review doesn't mean they were paid off.

Ouch. I just loaded up AVG on XP the other day and have been happy so far with it. Definitely not bloatware like McAfee. But dang... that site doesn't give me anything to sleep well about at night

I checked out your link but unfortunately it did not give any specific details except to say it failed.
According to their site

The VB 100% logo is awarded to products that detect all In the Wild viruses during both on-demand and
on-access scanning in Virus Bulletin's comparative tests. The product must also produce no false positives.

According to this it could have produced one false positive or missed one virus and received a fail rating.
Since they do not go into specifics it does not tell me alot. So to say it is worthless without more details
is fairly harsh. Just my 2 cents.

Also on their site

However, do not over-emphasize detection rates when making a purchasing decision. The products given VB 100% awards should certainly be a good starting place, being those that were the most up-to-date against viruses on the WildList when products were submitted for testing.

Apparently even they do not think its "worthless".

LOL!

Well, I guess *some* virus protection is better than none at all.

Unfortuantely, in this case, gotta place my vote for Norton's A/V 2002. Easily installed/updated and administered.

And if I'm not mistaken, "The ScreenSavers" on TechTV just recommended this a/v freeware. That alone will keep me from trying Grisoft's product. Past experiences have taught me that (generally speaking) if TechTV recommends a software app, it's either poorly supported/engineered freeware OR it's over-priced, under-featured retail software with a better freeware competitor. The one exception I can think of is the "gimp" imaging software.

After fighting with McAfee 6, and Norton 2002 I tried AVG and havent looked back. It has saved my ass a couple of times and always worked flawlessly.

AVG Same thing, only different. Looks like AVG isn't so how after all. Sometimes you get what you pay for.

Didn't work for me. I installed AVG on XP pro and it gave me a BSD shortly after - I think during a background scan. Went to Norton 2002 ans it's fine. Oh well.

I'm a little skeptical about that anti-virus site that's been referenced...

Just did a WHOIS, and their administrative contact is paul.fisher@SOPHOS.COM, their nameserver is ns1.sophos.com...
Sophos, as-in, Sophos Anti-Virus. Hmmmmmmm.

Check out this link icsalabs.com

They think enough of this software to list it as one of their certified products.
This just proves that if you look hard enough you can find a website to back
up your veiwpoint no matter what it is.

So far its not listed as certified for XP but thats another story.

Also do not forget that the AVG 6.0 Free Edition offer is not valid for European users, except the users coming from United Kingdom.
They actually have to pay for this "worthless" software.

Since you must have virus protection nowadays, this is better than nothing.
But, as was pointed out earlier, Norton AV expires after 1 year, and uninstalling/reinstalling resets counter.
At the very least you should clean out your system a least once a year anyway, so Norton's expiration should be a non-issue.

In the past couple months, I have seen a lot of PC's come in for repair's that were infected with viruses.
Many of these were running Mcafee.
Norton found and removed viruses in all infected systems, every time.
With the deals here in this forum, have seen full version of Norton for free, or many cases where it was under $10.

All virus protection programs work GREAT..........................................................until you get infected..............

For the ppl who had mcafee, did you try running a full scan with it? Just curious as i know ppl who have AV installed.. but they might not have it set to auto-scan.. or never do scans of their HD's.

Yup, AVG is the best AV software I've found regardless of cost. Consistently finds things that Norton and McAfee miss, it's not a ridiculous resource hog, and free to boot. I recommend it constantly.

Before bashing this software based on someone elses review, you should run it side by side with Norton or McAfee. I have AVG and Norton running together, and AVG has detected some Viruses that Norton didn't. AVG was also able to "Heal" viruses that Norton couldn't.

So far, I am happy with this program.

Since this program is free, is it legal if I install it on another computer with the same serial #?
Or will I need a separate serial #?

I have a friend who doesn't have web access aand would like to try this out as well.

Thanks.
