I've been using it for a while now, no problems. My only gripe is that you have to check the entire hard drive or entire removable media. It would be nice if you could check individual files. Computer shopper did not rate it well as it missed a few of their test viruses.

Started using this at the beginning of last year. No problems at all and Grisoft keeps the virus database very up to date. Excellent program!

I have been using AVG for a month now. I just hate the idea of having to re-up every year with Mr. Norton and his bunch of shovel-ware cronies and Mcafee (same boat).

AVG caught a virus that Mcafee missed! They are on the ball with pattern updates, it's small and loads fast in XP, I think this is the BEST free anything to come along in a while!!

Get it!!

Fritzo:
Yes, it can be set for automatic updates. We have ours at work set to check for updates every day at around noon.

Have been using AVG for over a year and prefer it to any Commerical scanner; It picked bugs that Norton missed! To the earlier reply poster, you can check individual files go to Test on the menue barcand then click on Custom= put a check next to the folder/file you want to scan and leave the boxes blank on the ones you do not want to scan. I strongly urge all clients I build systems for, to download and use Avg and update when available.

FWIW PC Mag gave this program a pretty unfavorable review Here.
Note that the customer comments are all in disagreement with what PC Mag says.
For the people who use this, does the program really attach a message to all outgoing e-mails? Any way to stop it if it does?
Thanks.

Ive been using it, and I never see any message attached to my outgoing emails. (I sometimes need to send stuff to my other email accounts) It seems to take less resources than the other antivirus programs that I have used in the past. I do not know if this is a good thing or not, but it works for me.

edit: I dont think I am using the pro version which was reviewed. Nevertheless none of my outgoing emails have ads attached or lines attached.

by the way: if your norton subscription runs out, just set your clock date a year back and you will be able to run the updates for NAV.

All I can say is you have to try it. Look at all the reviews from PC Mag that disagree with the "expert". Look at all the people here that give it a thumbs up. It gives a message to people receiving e-mail this meggage:

Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free.
Checked by AVG anti-virus system (http://www.grisoft.com).
Version: 6.0.365 / Virus Database: 202 - Release Date: 5/24/02

No Biggie to me. I think it actually would make someone receiving an e-mail that says it was scanned before sending feel slightly more comfortable that I was doing this with my e-mails. Just my two cents.

I'm so partial to NOD32. By far the best antivirus out. Small, Fastest scanner, More PC Bulliten awards then any other.

Perhaps it is because I am using outlook instead of outlook express. Perhaps it is only checking outlook express.
Maybe my email is not as safe as I thought it was.

Either way, nothing gets attached to any of my emails, yet it says the email is protected and certified.

I'm a little (ok -a lot) ticked that C.A. jacked up the price from 9.99 to 19.95 on the day the IPE program expired.
here is one user they're not getting

If history means anything, McAfee Antivirus USED to be a FREE program too. It also used to be good. That was back in the BBS Days and maybe early internet. Then they found out that they could make a lot of money selling it, or something like that. I suspect it's a good business model... since it's hard to steal market share away from Symantec/Norton, Trend, and CA/McAfee nowadays. Give it away for free until it penetrates a lot of PC's and then "It's getting too expensive for us to keep up, you'll have to pay" or it'll just die because it's not being updated enough.

Oh well, enjoy it while it lasts and be ready to switch again when the new freebee arrives.

Does anybody noticed the review for the free AVG antivirus software
was pretty bad by the current issue of PC Magzine. AVG gave 6 false positive and missed 2 viruses. They gave it only 2 stars while Norton Antivirus 5 stars. Is it actually that good as you guys said? Confused

You don't need to screw up your calender like that... All you have to do is uninstall, and reinstall NAV! It automatically resets it's internal subscription for the next year from the date it was installed.
Also, regarding getting updates: You can d/l virus definitions in a self-installing zip file from www.symantec.com that, when executed, automatically updates your NAV files. It's kind of sad.....I ran the Live Update after the Benjamin worm was announced, and got no updates. Went to the Symantec website, and found the manual update dated that day. The LiveUpdate file wasn't scheduled to deliver for two days afterwards!!!
:disgust: After installing the manual update, it immediately hit on two files that were downloading from Kazaa that were infected! Talk about side-stepping a bullet!

Is it me, or is PC Mag worthless? I gathered, from that article, that Norton Anti-Virus pays them more than any other in advertising.

PC Mag's credibility is crap.

I suppose the guys at PC Mag didn't know how to install the AVG program properly and run it.
Actually I almost agree with Gilby. Makes me wonder anyway. If you can't beat someone with a better program, beat down the other guy by telling everyone how lousy his program is. AVG is the best AV program I've ever used.

Just right click on an individual file and you will see the option to scan it with AVG.

I have been using AVG for a month now and it is great. Takes up no system resources that I can tell
except when opening up Outlook Express there is a slight delay before it fully loads.

I haven't tried AVG myself, but a friend tried it, and it MISSED viruses that the online scanning checkers found. In this case, it missed the JS Seeker trojan/virus.

So, I will stick with Norton.

He did like the interface though, and yes, he did get the latest virus defs.

I tested this. Even with the outgoing e-mail scans on, the emails i sent don't have any attached message. Actually, the "problem" was also mentioned in PC Mag, which makes their review even more suspicious to me. However they were using Avg Pro version. Maybe the free version don't have this "feature"?

Anyway, I'm convinced to keep Avg on my system. And since I've jumped onto that Amazon Norton Antivirus deal, I'll also load the norton Pro on. My previous exp. with Antivirus was very happy. It's definitely one of the best.
