Directron has NMB fans for $0.99.

These fans rule. They should be dual ball bearing with a thermistor. I've paid over $7 for these fans before. The cable is only 7" (that's what she said) so you'll need to solder in some extensions but you can't beat this price for a quality fan.

Dell uses Adda and NMB and Macs have used the NMBs also.

Noise: 22-40 dBA

That's a pretty wide noise range.

Also,

Notes: (1) To reduce the noise level from this fan, please add a 12-to-7 volt adapter for only $3.99 (must be used together with the 3pin to 4pin adapter)

So, you have use this adapter to make it quiet? Total price would be $4.98... then you also need another adapter to convert from 3->4 pin....but you could probably solder the Fan leads to the 12->7 adapter.

splice - Even though the Directron site doesn't mention it, nino says these are variable speed fans. That would explain the wide dBA and CFM rating. No one actually needs to buy a 12-to-7 volt adapter for $4, it's just easier than wiring it up yourself. The 7" wire length is fine if you're going to be using this fan on your CPU because the header is close enough to the heatsink to reach. I'm going to order a few of these and use them with a fan baybus. Thanks for the hot deal nino.

Received 10 of these fans Friday. They do not appear to have a thermistor (usually exposed from the hub) so I doubt they're variable speed. Outstanding deal nonetheless, and in most chassis the leads should be long enough to reach the 3-pin motherboard header(s).

Best regards,
Floyd

How much was shipping for the 10 fans? I know it will vary based on location, but a ballpark figure would be nice to know.

Damn, I was hoping that they had the thermistor. Their picture shows it being there and the difference in speed ratings made me believe it. Oh well, still a great price for this awesome fan. I jumped on 15 of them and am going to replace and sell off the ones that I'm currently using.

I make my own converter by just putting in a 1Watt resistor (about 20 cents at RS) to bump down the voltage until I can live with the noise. Don't buy the converter, just solder in a resistor along the red lead.

haha, its Floyd

Anyways, I think these are fan's rated at the max, and when you set them at 7volts what they will be at (pretty useful information if you want a low and high rating, otherwise hard to obtain)

NMB Product Page for the 80mm model.

Without the thermistor, they will run at max speed... they're good fans, but a bit loud at max speed.

I ordered some of the 92mm a couple weeks ago, a great deal especially considering the included chrome guard and plastic rivet-mounts (only 4 holding the guard) but again a bit loud, though nothing a resistor or the 7V mod wouldn't solve... Directron is calling them "bare leads" but i think they do mention that there IS a connector, albeit 4-pin, that CAN BE USED on a std 3-pin header if you swap wires (if necessary), and you have the extra space to the side of the 3-pin header, that 4th pin will just go unused (YMMV).

Now I can hear only Delta CPU fan
Sorta like insulating your windows cuz you live next to the airport. You no longer hear the cars outside, only the airplanes buzzing your house.

What are the specs of a resistor you would use? I want to lower the noise on my Antec case fans...
And would it be the same one to use on all similar 80mm (non Delta) fans?

Yup... it's debatable whether a PC really needs that much airflow from a single point, but I supposed too much is better than too little... then again it's almost necessary to use something like this if you want to filter it too. To quiet a couple of mine I used a larger value resistor than Gracjan's 10 Ohm, didn't need so much airflow so I settled for 68 Ohm. I also tried 100Ohm, and it didn't slow the fan down so much that it might fail to spin-up upon power-on, but like I wrote above, I'd rather have too much airflow than too little.

does anyone know of any 4-pin in-line molex switches? what i want to do is hookup two case fans to be able to be turned on and off via a switch. such as a unit that plugs between the power supply line and the fan power line, with wiring to a switch i could install in one of my extra 3.5 in. panels. my goal is to be able to turn the fans on and off from without having to open the case every night. any help?

I see that there are those additional in-line voltage regulators made for 4-pin molex power; are there any that drop lower than 9.6V? would going too low be harmful? thanks

In the last 2 weeks, everytime I open up the case and add something, the temp gets lower. The PS temp has gone from 47 to 43, and the CPU from 34 to 30. The board temp stays 22. Interesting eh? This is an antec SX1030 case.

i bet if you took out the cpu the temp would plummet.... just betcha.......

But don't you think it is geting considerably slower with 12-7 and resistor modifications.
I mean this 80mm fan is 25 CFM, if you pay $4 for 12-7 "adapter" and who knows how much for 3-4 pin adapter you will get miniscule CFM 80mm fan that is quiet for $5. What is the point in doing that. The soldering and resistor modifications for 92 mm fan will make that fan slower too, no? Plus there are not too many cases you can use 92 mm fan without additional cage.

SVC sells 10 80mm NMB fans for like $19, with acceptable 22 dBA and probably cheaper shipping than Directron.
This Directron deal looks as a totally impractical idea to me.

They're both good quality. The Panaflow is slightly quieter, but sleeve bearing will give it maybe 50-75% of the NMB's lifespan in cool environments, far shorter lifespan in hot environments. NMB would be better choice for a heatsink or PSU because of it's dual ball bearings.
