You're totally correct. I'm retarded for not catching my own mistake. The factory reconditioned SKSHT500 speakers are $180.00 for a set.

would you guys trade in a HT R500 for this and pay the extra $170..I do not need component video switching as my HDTV has 2 of these inputs..one for my dvd and set top box/cable etc...
Are there a enough features to warrant this switch?

only if you want the sixth channel for Dolby Digital EX and DTS ES Discrete and the learning remote and no worries about having the LFE problem

As I recall the 600 adds the sixth amp channel, on-screen display, learning remote, component I/O and 15W more power. Personally I did not require component switching so chose the 500 as the additional channel is rarely used, the power increase is unneeded or negligible (especially with the HT500 speaker package), the OSD is useless after initial setup (if not always) and I would rather select my own LR. As far as the LFE defect, I believe anything they have been shipping for awhile now (new or refurb) has been corrected and in any case would be fixed for free so did not affect my decision.

Based on recommedations at the Home Theater Spot forum (they have an entire Onkyo-specific section worth checking out), I bought this refurb combo for $489 shipped during the St. Patrick's Day sale and couldn't be happier. Looks brand new and the damn thing shakes the house. I also like the component video switching for HDTV (future) and DTS-ES for discrete 6.1 (future) that the 600 receiver offers over the 500.

Favorite home theater moment thus far: Gandalf vs. the Balrog.

wow...you're right... I'm glad I didn't hesitate in ordering mine. I'm still not sure if I want to SKSHT500 speakers though. I'm really intrigued by the Fluance AV-HTB speakers. I have never heard it in person, but there hasn't been a single bad review about them anywhere.

This HT500 speaker package is made by Polk Audio for Onkyo. Very nice package and a STEAL of a price.

I picked up a set and am happy with them so far. Lots better than the little home theater speakers that came with my HT-in-a-box, for a reasonable price.

How long does it take for newly earned Onkyo points to post to your account? I'm waiting for points so I can order the SHS-HT500.

Mine were there almost immediately. I ordered the receiver and confirmed it was done, then went right back and ordered the speakers...

I've got some decent thick monster cable that I've had for a while, but it has some pole-like tips on the end that I put on to make connecting to my old speakers easier...

Is there anything that makes more sense when connecting this receiver than using the "twist the wire and tighten down the nut" connecting method that onkyo recommends? Is there an end that can be soldered on that will easily fit these connectors? Afraid I don't know anything about bananna-style or binding post connectors other than I've heard the name... which are these?

Woohoo, it is back!! I jumped on it right away this time instead of pissing around. Many thanks for the update.

My points haven't posted either. I am also waiting for the points to be posted to my account before ordering the speakers. Anyone else have any feedback on this?

I made an inquiry with Onkyo via e-mail regarding the availability of the points and they sent me the following e-mail:

The points are available after the item ships. The order you placed will be shipping out today.

Sincerely,

So, as soon as it ships, I'll be ordering some speakers.

For any of you that own the SR600, is there any way to select NO COMPONENT VIDEO source. It seems that for every video source under "input setup" you have to choose either COMPONENT 1 or COMPONENT 2 along with the proper digital audio source. But I have multiple video sources and only two of them use component video (HDTV Receiver and DVD) while the rest do not.

For example, my Sat Receiver is svideo connected to VIDEO 3 input. When I select Video 3 the video comes from either COMP VID 1 or COMP VID 2, but not from Video 3 Svideo like it should.

The only way I have found around this is to turn OFF one of the component video boxes (HDTV Receiver or DVD) so there is essentially no COMPONENT VIDEO signal feeding into the receiver through that input, and then the SR-600 chooses the correct svideo source to pass through to the TV. What a PITA!

Is there any way around this?

I received the SR600 yesterday and set it up this morning. I love everything else about it!

(...)

2) Complement the TX-SR600 with a set of SHS-HT500 speakers. Price
once you log in is $180. If you buy the receiver FIRST (that is,
COMPLETE THE PURCHASE OF THE RECEIVER BEFORE YOU BUY THE SPEAKERS)
then you will have another $16 in Onkyo dollars in your account,
so the net price will be $180-16 = $164, free shipping. If you
don't buy the receiver, the price is $180-10 = $170.

I decided to take advantage of this deal, but after purchasing the receiver, I have 0 Onkyo points in my account. I didn't see any speical instructions other than just purchasing the receiver to attain the extra 16 points (Unless I was supposed to hold on to the 10 from signing up to gain an extra 6?), so have they just removed the bonus points associated with purchasing the receiver between now and when you did it? Or did I somehow do it incorrectly?

Glad you found the answer to your own question. I did in fact receive my additional 16 Onkyo points after the receiver shipped. I've got the receiver in my possession...now I'm just waiting on the speakers.
