Would this HT in a box work ok if we were to hook up an Apex AD-1500 DVD player to it? Is there any difference in sound quality using the cheap Apex DVD Player?

The TX-SR-600 / SHS-HT500 will work fine with your DVD player. I believe the Apex 1500 has a digital coaxial output.

Glad you found the answer to your own question. I did in fact receive my additional 16 Onkyo points after the receiver shipped. I've got the receiver in my possession...now I'm just waiting on the speakers.

I finally got the points posted to my account for ordering the receiver. So, as u prolly already guessed, I placed an order for the speakers yesterday.

The only bad thing (if you can call it that), is that both items are still showing as "prepped for shipping". How long does it take for these items to actually get out the door?

Thanks.

I would also be most curios as to hear what recommendations someone has for stands.

My receiver and speakers shipped out within 1 business day of ordering them. The website updates are not quite "real-time" so you may find that your receiver is already on the way. You'll eventually get a tracking number for it.

FYI, mine shipped out of NJ...I'm not sure if they have multiple warehouses or not.

Just FYI,

I ordered both the receiver and speakers and received them last friday. I noticed one of my front speakers ( the right if you follow the color coding) didn't sound clear. I'd get a fuzz or static sound when it was driven sometimes. I swapped the left and right speakers and the fuzz followed the speaker so I called Onkyo service Monday and they shipped me out a new speaker Tuesday and told me to junk the problem speaker if I wanted or keep it for parts.

Pretty good customer service in my opinion although I suspect a lot of the speakers might have this problem if they shipped me one with no questions asked. You might want to check yours closely.

For satellite stands, I recommend these stands at Wal-mart:

Link

I got these in the mail a couple of weeks ago and they seem to be of very good quality. Good solid metal base and stand, and the wire threads though the pole (I assume that's standard).

Shipping is about 8 bucks but it's still cheaper than most stores..

Kwad : I was in on the recent Spiegal 'deal' for the Sony DAV-C990 at approx $350 shipped. Given that has now been revoked, I searched the forum and found this post. Just checked Onkyo and the deal seems to be still on. Methinks now I might be a tad less miffed at Spiegel!

I currently have a Sony DVP S-560D DVD player. I've lost the remote to that player (replacement from Sony costs $40). Any chance that the remote that comes with the SR600 receiver can be programmed to control my currently remoteless Sony DVD player?

Else, I figure the Apex AD-2500 Progressive-Scan DVD Player ($60) should be a good substitute? Amazon "High-resolution progressive-scan video output (for use with compatible TV) .Plays DVD, VCD, SVCD, CD, CD-R, CD-RW, MP3, and HDCD-encoded discs". Is the Apex missing any features that I may regret later? Also, is it region-free or easily software-hackable to that end? Alternately, could you suggest a reasonably inexpensive DVD player that is suitable?

This would total $575.74 total for the full system, including the Stands $40 recommended by Lizardman earlier in this thread. Are there any other 'hidden' costs I am missing?

How many hours should I expect to have to put in to get the whole set up together, once it arrives? I am a newbie to this.

Thanks,
ariom

The remote that comes with the 600 is capeable of learning any other remote. It's an EXCELLENT remote and also includes programmable macros. Only thing is, I'm not sure how you can make the 600 remote learn your DVD player's remote, without the DVD player's remote?? Maybe you could just take your 600 remote into a store that carries your DVD player, and program the remote from there?

yup, my Onkyo receiver is going on 9 years. Movies sound great w/ surround. No problems whatsoever. But this damn thread is tempting me to upgrade. I have to keep telling myself I don't NEED it!

Yea, I'm in a similar place. I have had mind since 92, and it still rocks...

I have heard that also but the drivers are made in China so regardless of whether Polk is involved it comes down to how they sound and for the price (this price) I have not heard any complaints and cannot make any of my own. As I've said before, If you wanted to buy or make your own enclosures of this size it would cost nearly as much anyway (if not more) so theoretically you could replace the drivers and it would still be a good deal.

Headphone out is solid. I use mine all the time for gaming and occasional late-night use.

Ordered Saturday, received the unit today. On the box, it says "Refurbished - Slight Cosmetic Defect." It looks absolutely brand new, no scratches, dents or even dust particles. There is a small scratch 5mm long on the backside of the remote control, I rubbed it off with alcohol. Basically I can rip off all the refurbished stickers and sell this thing as new. Great deal!

LINKED
$190 Shipped Free...I am gonna pair these up with my Sherwood 6108 I just bought for $79 and I will have surround sound in my basement for under $300
I have an older Onkyo 494 as my main right now and I love watching DVD...the sound from Onkyo receivers is just so clear and crisp its just unbelievable at that price point. FM picks up great as well. I will retire this older receiver soon just waiting on my cable company to upgrade to HDTV and component outs which should be late this year...then I will pick up the Onkyo 600.
