holy damn, that is a lot of people...

Give this one a few months, and we will see the real death toll, they are saying that a lot of water supplies have been poisoned and there is virtually no food left... a lot more people will die from this one...

Wow... I just heard the death toll is "almost up to 10000" on the news.

With how inefficient these 3rd world nations are about search and rescue and how slow communications are, history has shown that death estimates continue to rise over the course of several days as news filters in. When all is said and done it could be a lot more than 10,000.

let's imagine just for a moment that a similar ~9.0 quake centered in the Channel Islands off LA struck midday Wednesday . . . . there'd be upwards of a MILLION dead assuming a 20'+ tsunami also folllowed the quake.

there be ZERO advantage whether you lived in the 3rd world or the USA or not . . . rescue and relief efforts would be OVERWHELMED for many days.

Yeah, except we would have some freaking warning systems that tidal waves were coming.

There is a Tsunami warning system, it was implimented after the alaska earthquake that killed thousands in hawaii. The countries that were hit by this one don't participate in the warning system. Most of the pacific rim countries (japan, america, peru, etc) participates in the one that currently exists.

Right, which is my point. The US belongs to the warning system (rather, administers it), so there would indeed be a huge advantage to living in the states.

Since India and Sri Lanka are in the Indian Ocean they do not participate. Also I believe this is the first time a tsunami has struck either of those two countries. Maybe rules will change now

Yeah, except we would have some freaking warning systems that tidal waves were coming.

it would be extremely rare to have a large earthquake centered offshore LA. IF there was, there would be ZERO warning for the rest of So.Cal cosstal residents (other than the earthquake itself) . . . there would be only MINUTES till a large wave swept miles inland.

HOWEVER, if the tsunami was generated near Japan or Alaska (which is far more likely to affect SoCal) there would be HOURS of warnings since the wave travels ~500MPH . . . .

Unfortunately, there are no warning stations set up in the Indian ocean so Sri Lanka - many hundreds of miles away from the epicenter - WOULD have had time to evacuate (run!) if they had (for example) Hawaii's warning system.

And the death toll is now well-over 20,000 (and counting)

In 5 years most people will have forgeten about this earthquake, like most have forgotten about Hurricane Mitch.

what does this have to do with anything?

Maybe you will forget because you're not there, but it won't be forgotten for the people who has friends and family as one of the victims.

Malaysia has 53 dead and 34 missing. I'm from Malaysia.

The worst part about all this is that the places that are struck are mostly tourist areas, and now its tourist season.. damn...

Reading the Malaysian newspapers, victims say they see the waves come and sweep people away and they couldn't do anything, and after that, you see bodies washed ashore. Its so tragic..

Its much much worse in India and Sri Lanka as they are not shielded in any way from the waves and it hits them directly..

22000 and counting, dead..

Why...? why...?

I've donated to the Red Cross, please do donate to some charity organization that is helping these poor people..

Wow.....

what is the largest deathtoll for an earthquake??

Taken from the USGS site....

The world's deadliest recorded earthquake occurred in 1557 in central China. It struck a region where most people lived in caves carved from soft rock. These dwellings collapsed during the earthquake, killing an estimated 830,000 people. In 1976 another deadly earthquake struck in Tangshan, China, where more than 250,000 people were killed.

I used to have family in Malaysia, my mothers side of the family lived there. However they all live in Australia now. Even if they lived in Malaysia luckily they would have been in Kuala Lumpur, inland. I lived in Malaysia for almost 2 years when I was very young, but I still remember it. I have great memories of living there, lovely part of the world! This truly is a monumental disaster.
