Most of my extended family lives around Madras, a region that has a death toll of close to 10,000 people. Luckily, everyone is fine but the selfishness of my concern for them and only them is still eating me up inside. 44,000 people died and I?m relieved. I know this is human nature ? we only care about events that have a direct impact on our meaningless lives. This world lost 44,000 people? 44,000 mothers, fathers, children, sisters, brother- gone.

I did the same thing during September 11th ? I called my friends and family and then had a big sigh of relief when I realized that everyone was fine and that my life would continue, relatively unchanged. Now, two days after this tragedy, the numbers are sinking in. What saddens me is the randomness of it all. No one is to blame, no terrorist can be smoked out, nothing can be done for equilibriums sake: we?re just left with the corpses of babies, lined up in rows whie their parents cradle their dead bodies in their arms.
Such is the nature of life, I guess....

Nature is very unforgiving.... We have it easy compared to everything else competing for resources on this planet, but we're still at the mercy of the rock we call home....

I was not affected by this at all but I feel guilty too since I'm safe here in the US with my two little children. Hopefully, my donation will go some way in helping others. Maybe if we all gave a little, it could help ease their suffering?

Does anybody else find it significant that this earthquake occurred at a time of full Moon, ie spring tides, which pull the rocks of the Earth just as they do the waters?
Mark Burford, Braintree, England

Why was there no warning about the "Tsunami" after the earthquake? Where the scientists on holiday?
George, Phuket, Thailand

I want to donate but I want to make sure the money goes to help for the tsunami tragedy. First group I think off is the Red Cross but I heard they distribute the money evenly for every issue that they have.

Edit:

never mind the Red cross gives you an option to say where the money goes.

Yes, the Red Cross is accepting donations via redcross.org, not sure about clothes, but I imagine they will take anything right now.

i'm not sure if this is covered by the news yet, but the scariest part is that the earthquakes are still going on! the area around Banda Aceh (Northern Sumatra island, Indonesia) is still experiencing relatively smaller earthquakes about 5-9 times a day since the first one.

from what i heard, the rupture in the earth's crust over the indian ocean is now more than 600 miles long and it is still rupturing slowly heading south, so now people in the coast area of mid-Sumatra island (who weren't affected by the original tsunami) are now preparing to get ready in case they are going to get something similar in the next few days.

Edit: please confirm or correct me if you heard otherwise. i'm always looking at the news and will edit this post if this is not true.

yeah they are worried of the long term of effects of that ripped but that anything below 7 on the richter scale won't created such tsunamis.

scientists said it probably jolted the planet's rotation. "It causes the planet to wobble a little bit, but it's not going to turn Earth upside down,"
