Haven’t read the whole thread but I’m not sure if I’d say that or not. Lying to the American public so that we can go to war in both Vietnam and Iraq was pretty damned criminal. Not sure if you want to count slavery or he genocide of the native Americans as a singular crime, but those are pretty bad too. Or maybe secession from the United States to start a new country and going to war over it. I’m not defending Russian influence by any stretch but perspective keeps the hysteria in check.

Oh, that and African slavery were the worst atrocities we as a country ever committed. But in their day, these were not "crimes" in the legal sense. And they were not corruption. You could just as easily add the internment of the Japanese and the entire Vietnam War, but again, technically these were not crimes but rather bad/evil policies.

Incidentally, most of the genocide you refer to happened long before we were a country, in the early to middle 17th century, when our ancestors killed off over half the native American population by spreading disease.

These historical atrocities seem like apples to oranges comparisons with political corruption to me.

Though much of what was done to American Indians, in incident-after-incident, probably _were_ crimes in the legal sense. It's just that the legal system would never convict for them, because it was complicit in those crimes. Likewise many things that happened under slavery - and soon after, e.g. lynchings - were criminal even under the rules of the time, but even those rules were not really enforced.

And it's perfectly possible that even if this scandal involves full-on crimes, they also won't really be seen through to convictions. So how are we defining 'crime'?

If you're referring to jstorm's response to you on page 1, he wasn't so much exaggerating as speaking in a very non-literal way. What he described actually isn't a "crime." However, he was trying to get to the heart of the problem by instead of looking at bad things Trump is doing, looking at what caused him to be elected to begin with. It's an ongoing cultural problem we have right now which will not be solved by Trump leaving.

As a side note, the OP framed his question so broadly that we have people talking about terrorist attacks, and historical atrocities from hundreds of years ago. I highly doubt any of those types of things are what the OP was talking about. So the thread is pretty much off the rails.

Baw you seem to be reaching for a gotcha on the word "all" which is a shallow arguement. If you think there aren’t people very liberally using the term "Nazi" you’re lying to yourself or have your eyes closed. When the protesters were out defending statues there were a group of neo Nazis that participated in (one that I know of) a protest and the more left leaning posters grabbed it and assigned to anyone who protested the statues. It became an out, an easy way to jump into an arguement without anything to say. Much the same as a right wing poster might drop the Antifa name into a conversation as a way to paint the left in a negative light even if they have nothing at all to do with Antifa. You’re gotcha is empty, don't be that guy.
