Charlie Watts of the Stones. His genius is in what he doesn't play. He has that rare gift of being fascinating to listen to even when playing the most simple, basic patterns - sort of the Matisse of rock and roll. I think Dave Grohl also has that gift. And Watts's playing has soul - something no member of Rush has ever come close to.

Oh, and BUDDY RICH DIDN'T PLAY ROCK.

yep FTW I agree. Travis Barker or the dude from Korn are not anywhere near the skill of Peart. Listen to some of the beats or transitions that Peart does, he is simply amazing!!

OK....I'm confused.

I always ASSumed from their image (and name) that they were some kind of Orange County Skate/Pop/Punk band (I assumed something like Blink 182 or Good Charlotte)....but then I saw one of their videos and I said "wow...these guys can play!"...so I picked up their new CD "City Of Evil" and was blown away!

I don't know the story on these guys...if it is trendy or uncool to like them, but these guys are great players!! (picture Paul Gilbert, Joey Jordison and Mike Patton putting together a pop/metal band!)

And they write some really cool, untraditional, almost proggy pop songs, but with catchy hooky choruses....I can't believe these guys are getting the commercial acceptance & exposure they are with a sound that sounds more like Iron Maiden meets DT than anything else that's currently on MTV!

I guess it proves never to judge a book by its cover!

Whoa whoa whoa... you didn't just compare that douche to Mike Patton did you? Look at the broad scope of Patton's career and come back here. Patton = versatility. That guy = annoying.

actually that was a quote from MIKE PORTNOY comparing that DOUCE to mike patton... and can you play like that DOUCHE? or do you have the perspective and judgement of mike porntoy i bet not... you dont know what you are talking about... im not saying patton isnt good, but to say the drummer from avenged sevenfold is a douche shows real ignorance to the subject... sorry, but thats the truth...

Mike Patton is not a drummer... he compared the singer of A7X to Mike Patton... Just because portnoy likes the band doesn't mean everything in it is godly... Hell, Dream Theater is a sick band but their singer completely makes it unlistenable for most people.

Comparing the vocalist of A7X to Patton is ludicrous.

But obviously you're in bed with Portnoy, so roll him over and tell him he sucks at comparing vocalists.

And for the record, there are many great bands out there who have parts that arent that great. Hell, I'll go through my list of top drummers...

Copeland - The Police - Sting is a great bassist and has a distinguishable voice but writes some cheeseball lyrics, especially towards the end of the police/solo career. Great musician, but definately a tchotch.

Peart - Rush - Peart has wrote some of the cheesiest lyrics of the last century. I personally like Geddy Lee's vocals, but most can't stand it. True music fans see through it though.

Freese - He's recorded for so many bands/albums he's exempted. Drums are solid as a rock though.

Why all of the hate for Phil? He's just as good as or better than almost everyone mentioned in this thread.

If naming, please name BANDS as well for most ppl don't know individual drummer names too well.
Clearly, you don't know much about music in general. No, neither the drummer from Korn nor Travis from Blink rank ANYWHERE NEAR the top.

I never did like Ulrich, even though I do love Metallica's older stuff.
His drumming fits well with their music indeed, but it's all rather simplistic, fast doesn't make it good.

For my favourite, I'd say Nico McBrain of Maiden fame.
He doesn't play fast, he plays good, heck just the intro to songs such as Where Eagles Dare gives a big boner(figuratively speaking ).

A good runner up is Jason Rullo from Symphony X, not the same "feeling" as McBrain, but damn the whole band plays ****** tight.
