Excellent list! I'd say Portnoy has more skill than the 3 above him, but he didn't have to invent a lot of what he plays.

believe it or not, people.... just because you like a band doesn't mean that they have the best drummer. i see ridiculous posts like "top 5 drummers" and see drummers from some dude's favorite bands..... that's the worst qualification you can have for labeling someone the best drummer.

do i like dillinger escape plan? yes. are they my favorite band? far from it. my favorite band is explosions in the sky (hence my name), but their drummer definitely isn't one of the best i've heard. dillinger doesn't make it on my top 10 list of favorite bands, but their drummer is #1 as far as drummers are concerned.

chris pennie's the best drummer i've ever heard.

If you ever get a chance to..........listen to Victor Wooten & Carter Beauford's "Making Music" DVD.

If you ever thought you were a good drummer.........this (among other DVD's)......will surely make you want to throw your sticks away!!! LOL!!!


These two are literally sick paired together. Then throw in Bela Fleck of the Flecktones & you've got timing sigs that are not even of this planet!

About 3/4 of the way thru the DVD, there's a segment where Victor calls out for Carter to "step it up" or something with a "fill" and Carter immediately jumps from the 5/4, 6/4 to some crazy, like 10/4 fill and comes right back in. Just sick!!

Carter is truly a talented drummer!!

Any one know of any cd's/dvd's i could check out, like tool-ish maybe some drumb solo stuff. Bacicly just vary instrmental but allong to lines of hard rock/heavy stuff, I realy wish i could find some more stuff like tool. just cant get enough of them.

I might actually have to agree w/ you on that. "43% burnt" is a good example of his playing, but I am also digging that drummer from avenged sevenfold. Dave Weckl is another honorable mention--one of the greatest, although rock isn't exactly his genre.
