well according to the modern drummer reader's polls, as of late, Mike Portnoy is the current champ.... not to say the greatest ever, but greatest right now. He has one greatest prog rock drummer for like 10 years in a row, and routinely gets best recorded performance and instructional dvd's.... so he doesnt just win for work in teh studio, he wins as a performer and as a teacher.... oh yea, and i think last year they inducted him into the hall of fame....

I can't provide any sort of expert opinion, but I think the drummer from Primus, and the drummer from Killswitch Engage are both really amazing. Two very different styles though.

When the son of Beatles drummer Ringo Starr, decided he wanted to learn to play the drums. Who did Ringo send him to, Keith Moon. Even a man of extreme talent such as Ringo Starr recognized that Moon was the best drummer ever. So I'll recognize it too.

If naming, please name BANDS as well for most ppl don't know individual drummer names too well.

Horrible picks for the BEST, they arent bad, but FAR from the best. Being a drummer myself for nearly 15 years I have to put my money on Neal Pert from Rush and Phil Collins, and whatever the guys name from the Dave matthews band is

i don't care how long you've played guitar... that's irrelavent to the point that avenged sevenfold is terrible. they're almost as bad as bands like saliva and stone sour.

althought i can't stand dream theater (waaaaay too damn classic rockish), they're all extremely talented musicians (berklee grads)

but i still think that chris pennie is the best, as far as i've seen (also went to berklee for a bit). listen to dillinger's first album.... he made that album at 19.

As a musician who has studied since the age of 6 years old, I have listened to more drummers in an extremely wide range of music than I could ever hope to count.

The best two drummers I have ever heard, from a technical and artistic sense, are Neil Pert and Buddy Rich. And I don't even care that much for the music either played personally.

Jon Bonham was a very skilled player also. But technically he does not quite match up to the two above IMO.

And Avenged Sevenfold < My very limp bizkit

^^bounch of solos..

I cant believe the thread got this far without a single mention of Josh Freese. I love him just for his work with The Vandals, but he plays with TONS of musicians in all genres of rock.

I'd say Dan Swano, however, that's more so metal then rock.

I'm not sure if this is "comprehensive" but here's a list of bands he's been involved with, either as a session drummer, or a side project of his, or his main project: Altar, Another Life, Bloodbath, Brejn Dedd, Canopy, Diabolical Masquerade, Edge of Sanity, Godsend, Incision, Infestdead, Karaboudjan, Katatonia, Maceration, Masticate, Nightingale, Odyssey (Swe), Overflash,Pan.Thy.Monium, Ribspreader, Route Nine, Star One, Steel, Total Terror, Unicorn

The "Big" ones are Edge of Sanity and Bloodbath .... at least IMO. Though many are among my very favorites.

Jordan Mancino from As I Lay Dying. (I know it's a modern band, and not really classic yet, but he's fast as hell on the double bass.)

for those who've never heard of dillinger escape plan, you may not like them... but don't worry about that.... just listen to the drumming. that's why i say chris pennie is better than the geezers of classic rock who've been mentioned (moon, peart, baker, etc)

http://www.progarchives.com/Progressive..._discography_BAND.asp?band_id=1929#mp3

this is from their latest album... it's not as hard or as polyrhythmic as their prior albums.

chris pennie = master of polyrhythms

if you're into really generic rock music that doesn't sound good, then i guess they're good *shrug*

to me, personally, i think they're absolutely horrible... but, then again, i tend not to like heavily produced music and stuff that sounds like everything else

but, as they say, different strokes for different folks.

chris pennie's still the best.

Another vote for Keith Moon here. When I put Quadrophenia on, all I end up listening to is the drumming. Outstanding.

Although I enjoy watching Bonham play, he had a funky wrist thing going on.

I've already listed my picks, but let me also add that Dave Grohl is, in my opinion the Ringo Starr of our generation in terms of influencing others to want to play drums. And the drummer from ac/dc wins the award for a "less is more" approach. He definitely knows when NOT to play and that's important when playing drums.
