Yeah he's great but not as well known as many for some reason. I got to see him play and got to meet him/get autograph 9 years ago.Originally posted by: nineball9
Billy Cobham, though he's usually associated with Jazz instead of rock.

I don't dislike Dream Theater (I own a DT CD and have heard several) but that's one thing I don't like about them and can only take every now and then. I get tired of Portnoy's constant double bass everywhere. It's fatiguing to me. Same with some of their downtuned guitars and over the top bass guitar. I'm just not a fan that kind of music though (chug chug chug chug). I like their songs that don't sound as much that way. Progressive doesn't have to mean bass.Originally posted by: Red Dawn
Actually the great rock drummer is the one that doesn't overshadow rest of the group with his playing. One thing I can't stand is a group whose drummer has drum solos in every single song they play on stage. The perfect rock drummer is one whe just keeps the beat and compliments the bass line.

If you listent to BLIND from KORN, you will understand the complexity of the rhythm the drummer must follow. It's amazing. I also vote for Travis and Chad from Red Hot Chili Peppers. Great drummers.
If naming, please name BANDS as well for most ppl don't know individual drummer names too well.

Fixed
No one has ever come close to Bonham (Led Zeppelin). Not even close by a mile.
Woah. That's not really cool. I wouldn't tell someone they're opinions about music are wrong. Who cares if they can't read music? Or that you can? It's still just your opinion. Many famous, very talented musicians can't read music.Originally posted by: TechBoyJK

can you play drums or an instrument? can you read music? do you know anything about harmony? i've been through alot of jazz clinics about composition and percussion, and the more i know, the more I appreciate folks like Avenged Sevenfold, Dream Theater, etc.. i just don't think you know what the fvck you are talking about. Seriously, AS is a band with massive talent, Portnoy even talks about them on his site.. You just don't see it, because, you dont know what you are talking about. I don't really like Dilinger Escape Plan, but I can admit they are incredibly skilled... I would just apply myself differently if I had the skill.
Slickone, notice your comment about "its fatiguing to me" the band is called, Dream Theater.... Dream/sleep/fatigue they are trying to run you down...
anyways, if DT isn't your cup of tea, there are plenty of other projects that have portnoy in them.. to label portnoy by his work in dream theater is llike caging a lion... listen to OSI, Transatlantic, Liquid Tension, Yellow Custard, etc.. He rarely uses double bass in OSI, yellow custard, or transatlantic..

Mike from Dream Theater. Can't think of his last name right now. I think it starts with an M though.

Jordan Mancino from As I Lay Dying. (I know it's a modern band, and not really classic yet, but he's fast as hell on the double bass.)

BTW, I can play guitar and bass, and a little drums.
And yes Virgil Donati has already been mentioned in this thread.
