Lars Olrich before he had a lobotomy in the early 90's...he was pretty good
Tommy Lee, through Dr Feelgood
many before mentioned, including drummers from The WHO, Led Zepplin, and Menundo

EDIT: I believe that if Phil Collins were never born, the world would be a better place

THANK YOU!!! which is why i think the portnoy responses are empty/lame.

can you play drums or an instrument? can you read music? do you know anything about harmony? i've been through alot of jazz clinics about composition and percussion, and the more i know, the more I appreciate folks like Avenged Sevenfold, Dream Theater, etc.. i just don't think you know what the fvck you are talking about. Seriously, AS is a band with massive talent, Portnoy even talks about them on his site.. You just don't see it, because, you dont know what you are talking about. I don't really like Dilinger Escape Plan, but I can admit they are incredibly skilled... I would just apply myself differently if I had the skill.

Slickone, notice your comment about "its fatiguing to me" the band is called, Dream Theater.... Dream/sleep/fatigue they are trying to run you down...

anyways, if DT isn't your cup of tea, there are plenty of other projects that have portnoy in them.. to label portnoy by his work in dream theater is llike caging a lion... listen to OSI, Transatlantic, Liquid Tension, Yellow Custard, etc.. He rarely uses double bass in OSI, yellow custard, or transatlantic..
Woah. That's not really cool. I wouldn't tell someone they're opinions about music are wrong. Who cares if they can't read music? Or that you can? It's still just your opinion. Many famous, very talented musicians can't read music.
BTW, I can play guitar and bass, and a little drums.

And yes Virgil Donati has already been mentioned in this thread.

lol, btw, im already to weird to be worried about being cool. honestly, I'm a damn good musician, daily trying to be the best I can be in how I express myself through music. i do care if someone can read music or not. If someone doesnt know how to read basic music notation, I can't just hand them shorthand for a jam.... I can't relay the precise method of how to achieve a desired mood. f someone can or cant read music determines the approach I take in communicating musical ideas. Many talented musicians dont know how to read music, or even have a real understanding of chordal structure or melodic invention. And I think it restricts them. Its a matter of architecture applied to art. Its an even bigger matter of discipline. Learning how to weave scales through chords with consistent and pleasurable harmony, in agreement with the rhythm's the notes are laid across, is a very very important musical skill imho. sorry for my grammar, im a lil drunk

Couple names I haven't seen mentioned in this thread..

Sean Reinert - (Death, Cynic, Aghora)
Flo Mounier - (Cryptopsy)
Tomas Haake - (Meshuggah)

All play in death metal bands, but are extremely versatile..

In terms of regular rock, Portnoy would get my vote as well.

Tomas Haake is really good. he handles poly rhythms very well...

Right or wrong you can still be a snob. Saying that you're right about something that is mostly subjective just makes you an arrogant snob.

1. Niel Peart (actually, I consider him a Percussionist rather than a drummer) I haven't seen anyone even in his league live.
2. John Bonham without question
3. Rick Allen get my vote for "least likely to succeed..yet I'll be damn if he didn't pull it off" way to go Rick!

No it doesn't. Not hardly. WTF are you talking about? If say, a gymnast does a routine, and I say it sucks, but the judges give 9.9's, and they all know a hell lot more about the sport than i do, I might be humble enough to admit that I don't know enough to begin to appreciate the gymnast's routine, and that I can hardly just say it sucks... that would be foolish criticism.. imho

Honestly, I worked a radio station and a sound studio and i hate conversations like these. Not because you all aren't coming up with great ideas, but because no one factors in the style and technical skills that were expected in each type of music and generation. If you're looking to compare Dream Theatre to anyone, you really need to compare them to same generation and genre musicians. For example, Dream Theatre really needs to be compared to Amon Amarth of MuDvAyNe, both with unbelievable drummers, and Ringo has to be compared to Led Zepplin or the drummer from, say, Lynyrd Skynyrd. Not to put anyone down, so don't get all offended and start the flames, but, in our own terms, its like comparing a Asus Motherboard to an Asus Graphics card, neither are on the same level.
