Not because you all aren't coming up with great ideas, but because no one factors in the style and technical skills that were expected in each type of music and generation. If you're looking to compare Dream Theatre to anyone, you really need to compare them to same generation and genre musicians. For example, Dream Theatre really needs to be compared to Amon Amarth of MuDvAyNe, both with unbelievable drummers, and Ringo has to be compared to Led Zepplin or the drummer from, say, Lynyrd Skynyrd. Not to put anyone down, so don't get all offended and start the flames, but, in our own terms, its like comparing a Asus Motherboard to an Asus Graphics card, neither are on the same level.

yea, different drummers may be good in their respective genre's, but may not be as great in other areas... maybe the thread should say, "most well rounded, most technical, etc" people in the 70's don't play the way they do now... of course there is overlap, but you didnt really hear drumming like you find in lamb of god back in the 70's and 80's....

this is why in modern drummer, they have different divisions for drummers, like jazz, progressive, rock, country, hip hop, etc...

I agree. Can't stand the band, but I love the drummer.

First of all it's impossible to narrow it down to one "best" drummer, but I'll give my favs, some of "the best"

Neal Pert is awesome. Limewire "neal pert drum solo" and check that out!

Pete Sandoval - Morbid Angel - Perhaps one of the fastest and cleanest percussionists ever. Check out his "Drum Check" on their latest album Heretic. Amazing!

Paul Bostaph - Slayer (any recorded while he was with them)

Chris Adler - Lamb of God - I love his work, not the most complicated or fast, but very original

An older more obscure band called "Death" listen to a song called Lack of Comprehension. I used to play that in my band and our drummer looked hilarious keeping up with the beat, really awesome. His cymbal work is crazy, very creative.

These are a few of my favs. Pete being the best metal drummer I've ever heard. Check em out.

Add to that list- Flo Mounier from Cryptopsy. http://www.flomounier.com/ The vids aren't speeded up.

-Gene Hoglan- (Dark Angel, Death, Strapping Young Lad).

Not sure if he's been mentioned yet but Mitch Mitchell from The Jimi Hendrix Experience is INCREDIBLE on most everything but especially on 'Fire'. I'm not a drummer, but I have had several friends who are and everyone of them found 'Fire' to be difficult to master.

I don't dislike Dream Theater (I own a DT CD and have heard several) but that's one thing I don't like about them and can only take every now and then. I get tired of Portnoy's constant double bass everywhere. It's fatiguing to me. Same with some of their downtuned guitars and over the top bass guitar. I'm just not a fan that kind of music though (chug chug chug chug). I like their songs that don't sound as much that way. Progressive doesn't have to mean bass.

I know I'm going to be repeating others here, but DT is a very versatile band. Not all their songs are like that. Listen to "Speak To Me" if you want to hear a very minimalist, mellow song with loads of mood and atmosphere. Heck, their sound has changed on almost every single album, so if you don't like heavy guitars and double bass, just check out a different period of their's.

Brann Dailor - Mastodon (very surprised he hasn't been mentioned before)

Chris Pennie - Dillinger Escape Plan (though the dude who suggested him originally is a biased wank)

Chris Adler - Lamb of God (plays in a straight-ahead groove/thrash metal band, but is amazingly creative)

Neal Peart FTW
Stewart Copeland for having the best 'feel' on a consistent basis
Danny Carrey or however u spell it for modern originality
Josh Freese for studio work/versatility

You guys have to check out the snare work of whoever the dude is from Dying Fetus... absolutely ridiculous... It's like he does a one-handed buzz roll at full velocity consistently in like every song... it's the weirdest thing to see in person.

Oh yeah, Chad Sexton from 311 is great at working drumline snare work into modern rock... He's to the snare what Copeland is to the hi-hat and ride.

OK....I'm confused.

I always ASSumed from their image (and name) that they were some kind of Orange County Skate/Pop/Punk band (I assumed something like Blink 182 or Good Charlotte)....but then I saw one of their videos and I said "wow...these guys can play!"...so I picked up their new CD "City Of Evil" and was blown away!

I don't know the story on these guys...if it is trendy or uncool to like them, but these guys are great players!! (picture Paul Gilbert, Joey Jordison and Mike Patton putting together a pop/metal band!)

And they write some really cool, untraditional, almost proggy pop songs, but with catchy hooky choruses....I can't believe these guys are getting the commercial acceptance & exposure they are with a sound that sounds more like Iron Maiden meets DT than anything else that's currently on MTV!

I guess it proves never to judge a book by its cover!

MP

Whoa whoa whoa... you didn't just compare that douche to Mike Patton did you? Look at the broad scope of Patton's career and come back here. Patton = versatility. That guy = annoying.

another really good death metal drummer is the guy from Nile... Actually, I think they've had two. Both are amazingly fast and every song is like a whole drum solo beneath the guitars. Fast, but on the other hand, not much "groove."
