“There is no fire like passion, there is no shark like hatred, there is no snare like folly, there is no torrent like greed.”

There are many reasons why people participate in and condone online piracy. I just added another ...

A school played 'The Lion King' at a fundraising event. Now it has to pay a third of what it raised

But they showed it in public, and that's a no-no. I wanna know who ratted them out?
That's true, but OP said it was online piracy, which is not an accurate representation.

And it was probably fucking Karen, since Becky made a rude comment about the cookies she brought to the bake sale.

OP didnt say that it was piracy.

OP said that lots of reasons why people pirate stuff. (as in, people want free stuff), he more or less suggested an additional reason for piracy was because megamediacompany is an asshole, and therefore deserves to lose revenue.

404 piracy not found

Copyright infringement? Probably. IANAL

Maybe Dizney put out algorithms/bots/whatever to look for certain keywords on the interwebs? No idea

Fucking Karen and her holier-than-thou attitude!

Either way it sucks for the PTA/whatever it was/is

Aha. To be fair, they deserve to be punished for showing the new Lion King anyway. They should have showed the old one.
Also kind of amusing since the Lion King is a rip-off anyway.

That sucks. Let this be a lesson for where things are headed with the current path of these psychopathic business entities. I'm enjoying the fact that there's fewer and fewer Disney content that I'd have any interest in owning because they're gonna get more and more like this.

Waaa, I want free shit. Hang the billionaires.

I'd be pretty pissed if I had to pay money because a movie happened to be playing at an event I was at. That doesn't sound like free shit at all, but hey, why bother not being a goddamned dumbass for 5 seconds in your life? Is it because you shoved your Firestick up your ass? And because your head is also jammed up there that you also lobotomized yourself?

Or, more succinctly, ok boomer.

Nah, this isn't Karen, this is some asshole MPAA motherfucker. The type that floated the idea of suing all businesses that played music (that other than the person who purchased the music could listen to). Sounds like with the RIAA dying that they've jumped to the movie side. Behavior like this will just hasten their demise.

Have you seen movie profits lately? I don't think they're going anywhere.

The rules when it comes to this sort of stuff are ridiculous. Even if you buy the movie it's often STILL not enough depending on where you show it. There's rules about the max number of people that can be in the room, and think even the size of the screen. There's also lot of weird rules like that about TV programming. Bars and such have to pay a premium to have TVs playing, I think it even goes by individual channel/program. Like if they want to put on a football game think they have to actually pay the NFL a certain fee or something. Gets quite ridiculous. There is so much greed in the copyright industry. It's a great gig to be in though, make something once, and profit off it forever from everyone that touches it and have very powerful laws that protect you. Not too many other professions where you can build something once and get paid for it over and over.

Possibly. Many smartphone apps that ID content also report its location very accurately!

As far as buying the movie, you are most definitely NOT buying the movie. The purchase price covers cost of the physical media but legally you're buying a license to view it privately in your home. That's IT! If you want to show it to an audience outside of your family members, you must get permission (and pay more, sometimes a lot more).

Same is true with DJ'ing. So much of that is unlicensed and if a DJ is legit (registered business) and gets reported the fines can be huge.

Another example is music you hear in a restaurant, bar, et al. Often times they will use Pandora, Sirius, even FM radio. This can legally get them in trouble if they are not getting permission.

As far as the PTA incident, more than likely it was some jealous asshole parent that knew these things and decided to report it, you know, because that's what assholes do!

And to add what Red Squirrel mentioned about football. Don't even get me started on the NFL!!! The fee for a cruise ship to feature the superbowl costs them $40k...for each ship!

At least in the US this is pretty settled law. You can replay a movie or music for friends. The instant you make money off playing it then you are out of bounds.
Sort of petty for Disney to peruse this case however it is a classic example of there needs to be a line somewhere.

Disney is notorious for copyright infringement prosecution. If you are going to play a movie in a public setting that Disney owns the copy right to, be sure that you go though a licensing company and have everything squared away, or else you do run the risk of Disney suing you.

Probably one of the parents at that school work at Pixar (or a friend of a parent) and either ratted them out or advertised it to boost fundraising inadvertently ratting them out.

The problem with copyright law is that it's owned by the rich, designed to look like fair use and protection for the little guys.

Companies like Disney decide when copyrights "expire" and enter "fair use". So then they steal all these "fair use" works and make them their own, and make sure the copyrights will never expire once in their hands. If they can't get it by "fair use" they'll find other ways to get what they want, starting with "legal" means like bullying or buyouts...if needed, I'm certain they use illegal means as well.

People get upset at companies like Apple and Nvidia for their apparent greed and "dirty" tactics... Disney is vastly more disgusting and sinister.

Pretty much, and it goes for IP law in general. Even patents. If you're a small inventor and patent something, a company can still pick it up and use your patent. Unless you have millions of dollars, you're never going to be able to defend it. Or if you don't patent your idea, the company will just patent it in your face and then sue you and take everything from you and your wages get garnished etc as these lawsuits are usually in the millions. The system only benefits the rich.

And yeah Disney are horrible, they are the ones who keep wanting to extend copyright terms, as if it's not already long enough.

Disney was the company that railed against home video, cuz it could be played multiple times for one introductory price, and also because there was no way to tell how many people would be watching each viewing.
They also tried to push self-destructive (limited number of plays) VHS and DVD for those reasons. They failed, but they also made their position clear.
