I only knew of him from Last Comic Standing, and he was pretty funny on that.

Was he taking a narcotic painkiller? It's the first thing that comes to mind when I think of overdoses. (It's usually mixed with ETOH though, which makes it really dangerous.)

Anyways, RIP, it's never good when something like this happens.

Sad. He was a good stand-up. I just heard a hilarious bit from him yesterday on Slacker while driving home.

Man, this REALLY sucks! I can't believe he died. The Roasts aren't going to feel quite complete without him.

That's pretty surprising. All these lesser known comics are dying lately. Wonder what Artie Lange is up to these days.

I remember Giraldo was pretty funny during the Bob Saget roast.

Artie apparently did a few shows in NY the other night according to Craig Gass. Sounds like he's doing a bit better.

BTW it's always nice that people reply with "who?" and "never heard of him" everytime someone dies.

I feel for his family and fans. I, too, did an accidental overdose of Valium (Lorazepam) but I lived (much to the chagrin of some people here, I'm sure.)

Damn man - he was hilarious and good at what he did. He also never made a run at making it big which I think he could have, he seemed to enjoy the middle ground.

He definitely made a run or three at it. Probably one of the factors fueling his drug abuse.

Sad. So many comics embody a pure asshole, but he really put himself in positions of humility well. He's up there with Bernie Mack and Chris Farley for me.

I can't imagine dying as young as many of these comedians do, its been a trend for the longest.

It's the Sad Clown thing again, I guess. It's amazing how many comics have problems with depression.

Any word on what drugs it was ? My bet is on Oxycontin and some kind of benzodiazepine. Very sad, kills so many people every year. Stay off the hard drugs people.

From a previous article : The Envelope

Stand-up comic Greg Giraldo was hospitalized for an accidental overdose of prescription drugs Saturday night, the New York Post reports.
A Comedy Central regular and judge on "Last Comic Standing," Giraldo was found unresponsive during a party in his New Jersey hotel room after performing at the Stress Factory in New Brunswick, N.J.
The 44-year-old comic, initially in critical condition according to the Post's source, was breathing on his own by Sunday.
In addition to his four nights at the club, the recovering alcoholic had been booked to appear Saturday afternoon at the New York Recovery Rally, billed as an event to "celebrate recovery from addiction."
-----------------------------------------
A recovering alco would be at risk for this type of stuff. Do we know what kind of drugs he overdosed on?

RIP

Check out Jay & Silent Bob Get Old podcast and take your pick, until we know. As the poster above, oxycontin features high on the list. But Jason Mewes' stories of how many he put away are something else.

RIP, I enjoyed his material.
