Grey's anatomy - bloody awful

Wow, the mod's are quick - I hit submit on the last one prematurely and wanted to just edit it. Now it seems like a double post.. Grr..

Anyways, my roommate is watching a Tivoed Grey's Anatomy episode and it's rare for me to be so annoyed by a show. Every doctor is having sex with another doctor, every person seems either really insecure or arrogantly libidinous... Doctor's are talking about their sex life while doing brain surgery too! Is this how people view life to really be like?

This show seems to be written not just by a person who's never worked as a doctor, but a person who's never been to a hospital. Seriously, this tripe is nothing but Melrose Place set in a hospital...

I've watched the show since it's inception (yes, with my wife), and I actually enjoy it.

You should look into the writer(s). The main writer is extremely talented, and is actually hailed by many in the industry to be a genius. They bring in doctors for many of the episodes to make it more realistic, and the imagery they use is unparalleled by other shows of it's type (even ER).

Yeah, I just walked away and left her to watch it alone. It just got on my nerves after 30 seconds.

It's like sex and the city - a show that's embraced for having a feminine perspective but, as tina fey said of sex and the city - "this isn't how women talk. This is how transvestites THINK women talk."

There's so much melodrama in the 15 minutes I've seen that.. Well.. I just can't take it.. Seriously, issues in the 15 minutes:

- Asian chick slept with her professor, making her new finance really insecure
- Rich chick spent $800 on room service, who's husband just finds out she's rich making him insecure
- Main doctor's estranged father tries to make peace with her after her mother dies, they were probablly estranged because he was.. Insecure?

That's enough drama for 3 seasons of a better show, but this show just likes to throw sh1t on the wall and see what sticks.. It's just bad writing in my opinion. And why is every male character but the guy with really good hair insecure?

My ex used to watch that show I personally hate it.

I laughed when they had that episode with that full shell inside someones chest and they where still alive......

That thing was what 20 inches long and about 5 inches in diameter?

OK, realism isn't important - authenticity is. People often confuse the two. ER is obviously not REAL, but it feels real. This show feels like pretty actors playing dress up, and rings false time and again.

Scrubs is a show I enjoy but it never strives for authenticity, the humor is in how fake everything is. This show, as a drama, should use the surroundings as more than a buffer / plot device - "let's have characters talk a lot about their love life.. While doing medical... Stuff..." That's what it feels like to me.. UGH.

OK, fine - he's a handsome guy, i admit that! But he always has a smirk on his face, like he knows how awful the dialog coming out of his mouth is (like harrison ford in the star wars movies). I respect that

If you started watching Heroes with the last episode, you wouldn't understand most of what that episode was about, so it doesn't matter what show you watch. Picking up a show mid-season (multi-seasonal shows make it that much more difficult) and making an ascertation on it based on that really isn't valid.

I'm not trying to sell you the show..just trying to explain that you're really not giving it a fair shake, imo.

I actually can't stand 24 or Prison Break or Lost. It's like the writers put "twists" into the plot for the sake of doing it. Real lame in my opinion.

The worst part of that show being basically an upgraded soap in a hospital is that the babes aren't even very hot. Sandra Oh is one of those most homely asian women I've seen, and that white chick is the definition of bland looking. I haven't watched the show so maybe there's some other babes, but those two stuck me as the main characters and they stink. If you want me to watch trash television when nothing else is on, you damn well better pack it full of some high quality hotties, because god knows I'm not going to sit through that kind of crap without some kind of payoff.

Lost puts twists in because the writers have no fvcking idea what is going on. To mask this, they create ambigious situations, more questions and offer NO explainations for anything because there are none. The show was always terrible because it had no story, but at first you didn't notice because there were 500 flashbacks per episode.

I watched the first season and a half or so (before starting grad school), and enjoyed it at the time. Haven't seen the last year's worth of episodes, but from what I hear, it's as you've described...much more soap opera-ish

I'll cut you a little slack there, but serial shows (like Heroes and Buffy) should be able to be judged on their individual moments, if not entirely understood. Look at an episode of heroes and, while you may be confused, you'll know that the writer has an arc in mind and that you just may not get it because you didn't see other episodes. This show, I got everything that was going on but.. It was all so cliched. Everyone was sleeping with someone they really shouldn't.

I'm brown so a lot of my family members are in the medical field - they spend their nights saving lives and not getting enough sleep, not fvcking all the time and talking about it while working on someone's heart. Don't get me wrong - I *KNOW* tv shows shouldn't be expected to be REALISTIC, but why even set the show in a hospital if you're going to be so indifferent about the setting? There's real drama that goes on in a hospital every moment of every day, why focus on such middling bullsh1t as two characters screwing in a closet?

With you here...I tried starting to watch Lost last season...watched a couple/three episodes and just couldn't get into it.

Maybe I would have had I started watching from the inception, but it's not worth my time to go back and try to figure out wtf's going on now.

The only show I've found it worth doing for was Sopranos.

I don't know who they are, they should cram them into the commercials. All I ever see from the commercials is that plain girl pining over the dude with the hair.

Short answer is, if they centered on ONLY the medicine, there would be no story arc, and most people wouldn't want to watch the show. If you wanted that type of stuff, you'd be watching Discovery and not some prime time show. It might as well be a documentary at some point. Show me one current medical show that doesn't have story lines that aren't similar in some fashion (hell, even House has elements of it).
