I finally bit the bullet and did it. I'm not a huge steak guy - I only have them 2-3 times a year, usually at some place decent like Outback or Texas Roadhouse. I've been putting off doing it at home because I was afraid I'd ruin a good, expensive piece of meat. I picked up a nice T-Bone today and used this rub:

WowowowowowWOW was it good! T-Bone steak + baked potoates + steamed butternut squash + apple juice...yummo! It was SO easy and came out totally awesome!

Cookie + man card please

Edit: Now with 100% more pics:

Char grilled on the outside and then set aside to cook on the inside. Came out perfect

man card pending until you consume another 279 pounds of steak to make up for all of those years missed.

try a sirloin. cook medium rare, take it out of the pan and put it on a plate, put into the pan soy sauce, honey, ginger, and garlic, and thicken the sauce up by sizzling it for a minute. When it's thick your steak will be perfectly rested.

Sounds like your mancard has earned an upgrade.

Remember folks, that "vegetarian" is the Hindi word for "bad hunter"...

Yeah I'm trying just straight meat next time, mainly just pepper plus some olive oil to get the flame going. Man...it's amazing how good home-made food can taste

oh i dont think you want this flame-kiss idea is so good! it'll either char up your meat or cook it unevenly (1 of the reason people trim fat off steaks before grilling). a high radiating heat output is enough to get a nice crust on the meat

Nah raised the coals and poured on some olive oil to let it char the outside to seal the juices in Works great!

Why?

It's so easy and you can sear the steak and keep all the juices in. I don't think I've fired up the grill since I got my cast iron. When you go to Ruth's Chris or whatever this is usually how they cook it.

They're not that expensive either. Just make sure you season it first if it's not preseasoned. A decent cast iron will last for the rest of your life.

You can get ones with free shipping at Amazon, that's where I got mine.

Well, to piggyback on your thread, I smoked my first roast last night. That was pretty awesome. Marinated it in oatmeal stout with a little bit of ginger and garlic, came out sweet and spicy. Plus I cooked up a little bit of lamb leg stuffed with garlic and skewered with rosemary sprigs. That was pretty phenomenal. And the whole smoking process couldn't have been easier. A+++, will use again!!!

Nice, congrats! What did you use as a smoker? My next conquest will be ribs. I didn't have much success with the pre-packaged kind (flavor was so bad we threw them away!), so I'm looking forward to using my own rub.

Actually my friend got me a water smoker over the summer, and I was just too hesitant to use it until now. It seemed like it'd be a lot of work, but it was stupidly simple. I'm also looking at ribs in the near future, gonna be awesome!
